are millions of children living in poverty and neglect. That’s why ELI Abroad
created the Youth Initiative, a super low-cost program to recruit volunteers
for youth programs in Uganda and other part
s of the globe. As an ELI volunteer,
you’ll live either with a local host family or in a shared volunteer house (depending
on the country)and work with children in orphanages, centers for at-risk youth,
public schools and local NGOs. It’s an extraordinary opportunity to make a
difference, make friends and travel the world.
Why
Uganda? This lush East African country has everything: jungles, mountains,
rivers and spectacular wildlife: no wonder in its prime it was dubbed The Pearl
of Africa. Today’s Uganda struggles with tremenouds poverty and the effects of
the AIDS epidemic which left tens of thousands of children without at least one
parent.

ELI
Abroad’s Youth Initiative programs are based in the Iganga District, located
about three hours east of Kampala, the capital. The town lies on the Mombasa to
Kampala Highway–one of East Africa’s major transportation routes. The bustling
highway gives the false impression that the town is teeming with traffic, but
just a few hundred yards from the highway, cars become a rare sight and quiet
African village life takes over.

Volunteers
live with an English-speaking host family; on weekends or holidays, when
they’re not working, many head to Jinja, a tourist-friendly town at the source
of the Nile. Here, they can kayak, mountain bike, go white water rafting and
relax in local cafes and restaurants.
