Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources (P.O.W.E.R.) is a
membership driven, not-for-profit community organization that strives
to play a major protective environmental role
within our community and
beyond.
vectorIAS (vek-TAWR-ee-us)is a collaborative Halton- and Peel-based
action and awareness initiative focused on Invasive Alien Species. The
vectorIAS initiative is in need of a temporary full time Program
Assistant to assist with project implementation from May 11 – August
21, 2015 inclusive.
Duties
• Under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Program
Assistant will help organize and implement invasive species training,
mapping, monitoring and removal activities, as well as related
community outreach deliverables, across Halton and Peel Regions.
• Help train small groups of volunteers to identify and collect basic
information (GPS coordinates, patch size, etc.) on pre-selected
invasive species; participate in removal and disposal activities.
• Develop and deliver engaging presentations, activities and/or
displays for a wide variety of audiences.
• Travel independently to sites across Halton and Peel Regions (not
accessible by public transit).
• Communicate information regarding upcoming events (via email,
facebook, twitter, etc).
• Maintain good working relationships with volunteers and community partners.
• Create and maintain meticulous records for project reporting purposes.
• Input/upload field data and maintain existing online databases.
• Other duties as needed, including office administrative tasks.
Qualifications
• Enrolled in, or graduated from, a related environmental degree or
diploma program.
• Experience with data collection in field ecology setting, native and
invasive plant identification, and invasive species removal.
• Outdoor education or nature interpretation experience, with
developed public engagement skills.
• Ontario driver’s license; must have own vehicle in order to access
sites not serviced by public transportation.
• Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others; enjoy
working with people; friendly, energetic and creative.
• Excellent leadership, organization, teamwork and communication
skills (including social media).
• Time management with the ability to set and meet weekly targets &
prioritize tasks.
• Physically able to carry out the duties of the position. Willingness
to work outdoors, rain or shine; flexible hours may include weekends,
evenings and holidays
• Familiarity with EDDMapS Ontario and GIS experience are considered assets.
• First Aid Certification and Criminal record check required.

Pay: $13.00 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay)
Hours: 35 hrs/week (grant funded 15-week contract position)
