Description: 4 month full-time internship paid at $15.00/hour.
Location:
Based out of the Ontario Nature head office—214 King St West, Suite 612,
Toronto ON.  However, this position entails extensive field work. 
The successful candidate will spend most of their time working on our various
nature reserves throughout southern Ontario, including overnights away from the
home office location. Some weekend and evening work will be required.
PURPOSE
AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The
Conservation Technician will work closely with the Nature Reserves Coordinator
to support field research and stewardship activities on Ontario Nature’s nature
reserves. 
Duties
and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct
    baseline inventories and vegetation community classification for Ontario
    Nature properties; 
  • Conduct
    property inspections to detect problems such as natural disturbances, vandalism, trespassing,
    or emerging threats such as invasive species; 
  • In
    consultation with the Nature Reserves Coordinator, organize daily field
    work schedule, equipment, and data collection needs;
  • Oversee
    interns and volunteers in the field;
  • Monitor
    biodiversity targets (e.g. reptiles and amphibians, species at risk,
    vegetation communities) and threats (e.g. invasive species) on nature
    reserves;
  • Contribute
    to compliance monitoring of conservation easements;
  • Assist
    with data collection, data entry, analysis and reporting as required to
    develop and implement property management plans.
  • Assess
    quality of trails and signs on the nature reserves.  Conduct trail
    clearing where possible.
Qualifications:
REQUIRED
SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
  • Minimum
    one year experience conducting field work
  • Experience
    organizing daily field work including consulting aerial photography, 
    compiling existing information and identifying data gaps;
  • Ability
    to identify common Ontario plants, wildlife (especially reptiles,
    amphibians and birds) and vegetation communities, as well as
    experience using dichotomous identification keys; 
  • Certification
    in Ecological Land Classification or Vegetative Sampling Protocol
  • Experience
    compiling information on natural areas, including natural features,
    threats etc.; 
  • Highly
    motivated, analytical and detail oriented; creative, pro-active thinker
    with superior problem-solving skills.
  • Ability
    to work well both independently and within a small team structure; 
  • Experience
    working with volunteers; 
  • Ability
    to work outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions (e.g.
    high summer temperatures and humidity, heavy rain) and on various
    terrain;
  • Proficient
    with word processing, desktop publishing, and spreadsheet software; 
  • Excellent
    written and oral communication skills; 
  • Navigational
    skills including experience with field GPS unit, compass, and air photo
    interpretation; 
  • Valid
    class “G” driver’s license and ability to rent a vehicle in Ontario.
  • Standard
    First Aid – Level C CPR first-aid certification;
  • Demonstrated
    interest in conservation issues in Ontario;
  • Experience
    using ArcGIS 10 Software is an asset
