Title: Assistant Curator
Job
Description:
Overseeing
the general care and maintenance of the animal collection and reporting to the
Zoo Director and General Curator. 
Responsibilities:
  • Works
    closely with Director, Animal Care team, and General Curator.
  • Supervises,
    coaches and trains staff.
  • With
    guidance from the General Curator and Zoo Director, oversees animal
    transfers and procedures, including research and development of proposals,
    obtaining appropriate licenses & permits, transportation logistics,
    breeding loan & donation agreements.
  • With
    assistance of Curators, oversees animal management/husbandry protocols
    ensuring established husbandry standards are met.
  • Actively
    collaborates with other departments to ensure that husbandry and
    behavioral management practices are upheld and support the guest
    experience. 
  • May
    occasionally be asked to offer public programming and must be comfortable
    speaking in front of guests
  • Overseeing/
    helping team of wildlife educators prepare for their outreach shifts.
  • Overseeing
    maintenance a small fleet of outreach vehicles
Physical Demands:  
  • Involves
    outdoor work and heavy lifting.
  • Must
    be able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head,
    pull, bend, climb stairs and ladders, and carry up to 75lbs.
  • Must
    be able to work in inclement weather.
  • Working
    on weekends and statutory holidays is a must.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s
    degree, diploma or certificate in a related field or equivalent experience
    would be an asset.
  • Working
    knowledge of animal husbandry.
  • Experience
    working directly with animals in a keeper or related position 
  • Excellent
    communication and leadership skills in a team environment.
  • Exceptional
    problem solving, analytical skills, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Self-starter,
    skilled at proactively identifying areas for improvement.
  • Excellent
    verbal/written communication skills. 
  • Valid
    drivers license
  • Bilingualism
    would be an asset
