Everyone should have access to healthy food, soil, and community.

We enact this vision by cultivating engaging gardens and programs that
catalyze healthy eating, ecological stewardship, and community
celebration. Fresh Roots stewards two ½ acre schoolyard market gardens
on school grounds in the heart of East and South Vancouver. The food
we grow is eaten in local school cafeterias, various Neighbourhood
House food security initiatives, and by neighbours. Our fields are
hands-on learning classrooms; engaging school communities and
residents of Vancouver in addressing food security, community health,
and vocational skills development.

The Position

The Schoolyard Farm Worker grows Good Food For All. They are outside
in the garden planting, harvesting, tending, mitigating pest, and
learning how to grow within the urban ecological context. They will
take a lead ensuring the schoolyard farms are growing healthily and
consistently stewarded:

Urban Sustainable Farming:
• Seeding, harvesting, weeding, pest management, soil management,
site-beautification, and other farming tasks.

Train and engage with youth volunteers to:
• Maintain schoolyard farm tools, equipment and facilities.
• Grow and harvest organic produce.
• Maintain accurate records of all schoolyard farm activities.

Increase youth understanding of environmental stewardship
• Facilitate hands on learning at the schoolyard farm including
fieldtrips, tours, volunteer days, and other programs as needed.
• Communicate vision, mission, and activities with community members.
• Collect regular feedback from volunteers.

Required Qualifications

This is a Canada Summer Jobs position, candidates must be between 15 –
30 years of age, be registered as a full time student in the previous
academic year and intend to return to school on a full time basis in
the next academic year. In addition, candidates must have/be:
• Physically fit to work outdoors in all conditions
• Minimum 1 year growing experience in small-scale agricultural production
• Willing to learn and have a desire to gain hands-on experience
• Able to work with a team and independently
• Able to communicate with diplomacy and respect with people of all
cultures, ages, and backgrounds
• Able to pass a criminal background check

Position Details

This position is contingent upon funding through Canada Summer Jobs.
• Begins May 4th;
• Ends August 28th
• $12.00/hr – 32 hrs/week
