The Essex Region
Conservation Authority was established in 1973 to manage the natural resources
of the Essex Region in partnership with our member municipalities and the
Province of Ontario. Our nine member municipalities include the City of
Windsor, County of Essex and the Township of Pelee Island.
Like all of
Ontario’s 36 Conservation Authorities, we are empowered through provincial
legislation to further the conservation, restoration, development and
management of natural resources other than gas, oil, coal and minerals.
The Forestry &
Operations Technician provides overall support of the Authority’s tree planting
and habitat restoration program, and assists in the management and operations
of Conservation Areas and other Conservation Lands.
Responsibilities
Assists in
the preparation of tree planting and restoration sites, actively plants trees
and engages in other beneficial silvicultural practices to ensure the success
of tree planting and habitat restoration projects
Completes
herbicide applications at tree planting and habitat restoration sites, and ERCA
properties, including applications associated with site preparation, seedling
survival, and nuisance/noxious weed control
Coordinates ERCA’s
seed collection program, including seed forecasting, collection, cleaning,
shipping and storage, liaison with private sector nursery partners and ensuring
appropriate propagation of seed to seedling stock at the nurseries
Assists with
the preparation of tree planting and habitat restoration plans, compiling plant
material orders, tree distribution, monitoring, and related activities
consistent with ERCA’s Clean Water ~ Green Spaces programs
Assists in
development of forest management plans and providing forestry-related
evaluation and input to municipal projects and on private lands
Assists with
ERCA education and outreach activities that promote tree planting and habitat
restoration activities
Assists with
the maintenance of Conservation Lands in accordance with ERCA standards and
procedures
Directs and
monitors Term and Special Grant employees
Performs
other related duties and responsibilities consistent with the position as
required
Working Conditions
Typically
M-F 8:30am to 4:00 pm. Seasonal extended hours and work on weekends is required
to support the tree planting programs and field operations.
Hazards and
Risks: Work with tree planting and related equipment (tractors, mechanized tree
planters, all terrain vehicles, and pesticides) and potential exposure to
hazard trees, noxious vegetation and insect bites
Environmental conditions: Work is primarily performed outdoors, with potential
exposure to significant heat and cold, requiring prolonged standing/ walking,
negotiation of obstacles, and bending or stooping
Occasional
schedule changes and overtime on short notice, especially during spring tree
planting

Hours of

extended hours during peak season
Wage
Rate: Start
Rate $24.26/hour with standardized grid increases based on paid hours
Grade:

Diploma in
the forestry or related environmental science discipline
Well
developed written and verbal communication skills
Familiarity
with tree planting and farm equipment, and ability to work in both an office
environment and out of doors
Provincial
Forestry and Agriculture Pesticide licence or ability to obtain these licences
within 6 months
Certified
Seed Collector or ability to obtain these licences within 6 months
Managed
Forest Plan Approver in good standing with the Ministry of Natural Resources
preferred
Minimum of
one year relevant experience in the field of forest restoration
Moderate to
heavy lifting and ability to perform physically demanding tasks is required
Must possess
an MTO Class “A” Restricted Driver’s licence in good standing
