The Dovercourt Boys & Girls Club is a not for profit organization that
provides after school, summer and March break programs for over 800
children and youth at two locations in Toronto’s west end (Dovercourt
Village: situated north of Bloor Street between Christie Street to the
east, the CPR railway lines to the n
orth and Dufferin Street to the
west, and Junction Triangle: located in West Toronto, roughly in the
area of Bloor Street, Dupont Street, Lansdowne Avenue, and Dundas
Street West.
The mission of the Club is to provide a safe, supportive place where
children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome
barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and
skills for life.
Our Vision: All children and youth discover and achieve their full
potential and grow to be happy, healthy, and active participants in
life.
The Dovercourt Boys and Girl Club has partnered with the MacGregor
Park Art Club to create 3 teaching gardens in a busy downtown Toronto
Park. This will be the first year of planting and programming and
offers the opportunity to be part of a brilliant hands on
collaborative project. MacGregor Park Art Club aims to bring community
members together through Art and Nature by creating thriving learning
opportunities.
Position: Summer Camp Gardening Instructor (2 positions)
Start Date: May 4th, 2015 – July 31st 2015
Nature and scope: responsible for ensuring the safety, provide care
and education program for children at Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club,
Junction Triangle Club House and Macgregor Park Teaching Gardens.
Reports to: Program Director
Salary: $ 13.00 hour (Contract Position)
Hours: 20 – 35 hours per week (Monday- Friday)
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and plan organic garden and nature based spring and Summer
Camp programs
• Facilitate fun, educational, positive learning experiences for
children and youth ages 4-14 (groups of up to 15 campers) with
supporting staff
• Maintain organic gardens as required, including planting, watering,
weeding, mulching, compost maintenance
• Assist in the evaluation of theSummer Camp Gardening program at
Macgregor Park and make program recommendations.
• Attend training sessions.
Qualifications:
• Educational background in a garden/naturalist based program or
equivalent ;combination of education and experience
• Experience planning, organizing and delivering outdoor environmental
education and recreation activities.
• Experience working with children in a mentorship role, especially
children 4 -14
• Knowledge and experience in environmentally sustainable gardening
practices, edible and native plants, and ecosystems
• Experience in working independently as well as with teams
• Good communication, public relations and time management skills
• Administrative, research, and writing skills
• Attend and successfully complete related mandatory training sessions
• Up to date Police Vulnerable Sectors Check
• Up to date Standard First Aid and CPR
Assets:
• Literacy with WordPress, to assist in writing and posting content
for our website
• Comfortable with facilitating drama and music activities for kids
• Background in visual arts – drawing & painting
• Enthusiastic, outgoing, curious, resourceful, and creative
• Able to thrive in a spontaneous learning environment
