POSITION SUMMARY

The Retail Sales Clerk (RSC) is the front line of our food co-op
retail store, delivering friendly custome

r service and working the
checkout counter in a positive and efficient manner. The RSC will
contribute to the co-op objectives of promoting local food through
sales and excellent customer services by stocking, receiving, and
presenting organized product displays.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Produce and Merchandising
• Maintain attractive produce displays; trim, wash, bundle produce as
needed; ensure departments displays are replenished, rotated, culled
several times daily; see that unsellable items are properly disposed
of; keep accurate shrinkage records using the Point of Sale System
• Keep POS up to date on cost and sale price of produce, adjusting
margins and pricing where necessary
• Inspect produce orders ensuring quality and sending back partial
shipments when quality is not up to standard
• Maintaining an awareness of product coming in for Local Bounty Bags,
setting aside ordered amounts and rotating properly
• Stock, rotate, merchandise and face product according to procedures
established by the Store Manager
• Check Best Before dates daily on all products within the assigned department
• Ensure that shelves, displays, aisles, prep & storage areas are in
clean, orderly condition
• Remove garbage promptly, sweep and mop retail and prep/storage area
floors as required
• Maintain the walk in cooler produce section ensuring FIFO &
Labelling standards are followed, and present the products in an
organized manner reflective of the sales floor
• Responsible for maintenance of the Return to Vendor and Free to
Staff shelves on a per shift basis, removing any items that remain for
more than 3 days for Free to Staff Items, and 7 days for Return to
Vendor. Check with the Receiver to ensure that all vendor credits have
been requested and issued prior to culling the item
• Communicates to the Kitchen Lead and/or Local Food Manager any
issues pertaining to product movement needs

Customer Service
• Greet and ensure that all member-owners and other customers feel
welcomed and have a positive experience while shopping with the co-op;
establish and maintain lasting customer relationships
• Keep informed and aware of various farms, producers, seasonality and
produce shortages to help educate and inform customers on our goals
and vision
• Become familiar with the co-op’s mission and values, sourcing
priorities, and products in order to answer customer questions in a
prompt, friendly, courteous manner
• Encourage new customers to invest as member-owners of the co-op,
explain benefits of ownership and sign up new members, ensuring
complete information on application
• Gain and share natural foods knowledge, continually access new information
• Help customers place & pick up special orders
• Perform opening and closing duties as required by shift following
established procedures
• Be proficient in the use of the point of sale system to ring up
customer purchases quickly and accurately; collect cash or debit
payment from customer and make change for cash transactions
• Open and close out registers following established procedures;
balance cash drawer at end of shift
• Maintain checkout area in clean, orderly condition; wipe counters,
return unpurchased items to shelves, stock and straighten shopping
bags, keep carts and baskets in order

Receiving and Inventory
• Check deliveries for damage, quality and accuracy, notify Store
Manager/Receiver/Local Foods Manager of discrepancies
• Ensure accurate, up-to-date prices, location, & dietary information
of products in POS system and on shelf tags
• Rotate deliveries into storage following first in, first out (FIFO)
procedures
• Participate in inventory counts as required

Any and all other duties as assigned

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Previous produce experience, preferably in a grocery or natural food store
• Experience creating & maintaining produce displays is an asset
• Knowledge of organic and natural food produce and product options is an asset
• Aptitude using a Point of Sale system
• Availability to work retail hours during daytimes, evenings, and
weekends as required
• Outstanding customer service skills
• Organized, consistently follows through on commitments
• Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands
• Excellent communications skills — good listener, effective speaker
• Ability to project friendly, outgoing personality
• Willingness and ability to learn and grow to meet the changing
requirements of the job
• Understanding of and appreciation for co-op values and principles
and working in a co-operative workplace
• A passion for or interest in learning about food, food security
issues, and/or food politics is an asset
• Valid safe food handler certification is an asset

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Required frequently: standing, walking, kneeling, squatting,
bending, reaching, lifting up to 50 lbs

Reports to: Store Managers

Hours: Part time up to 28 hours/week
