Senior Instructors hold a leadership role within our Program Staff
Team. Dedicated, energetic, and committed to providing amazing summer
experiences, they provide direction and support for our campers and
staff. Applicant should aspire to ga
in or improve management job
skills in a supportive small-team atmosphere. Senior Instructors will
split their time working directly with the Camp Director on summer
long planning & projects, as well as in delivering program content.
Given that all staff and campers stay onsite at the Evans Lake Forest
Education Centre while camp is in session, the action never stops and,
accordingly, applicants should enjoy working in ever-changing and
dynamic work environments. Very strong organizational and
interpersonal skills are a must, as well as a yearning for an endless
summer!
Responsibilities and Duties:
General
• Delivers Forest & Environmental education courses
• Plans events including our Open House, weekly Signature Events, and
Summer Programming
• Leads hikes and out-trips
• Shows positive and engaging leadership for campers aged 8-16
• Provide supervisory support and mentoring to junior staff members
(Volunteers, Cabin Leaders, Instructors)
• Facilitates training sessions during the Program Staff Training
• Other duties as assigned
Term
• Early May (early June start may be available) through late August, 2015
Safety
• Compliance with the society’s policies and procedures contained in
the Staff, Human Resources (HR), and Emergency Procedures Manuals.
Orientation to these procedures will occur during Staff Training
• Report safety deficiencies and concerns to Facilities Manager, or
(if suitable) during daily staff meeting
Reporting and Evaluation
• Senior Instructors report directly to the Camp Director
• A goal-setting process will be initiated at the beginning of the
season by the Camp Director, and to be followed up on with two
check-ins throughout the summer
• A formal end of season evaluation with Senior Program staff will occur
• Continuous feedback and communication amongst staff members is encouraged
Required Certifications & Experience
• First Aid Certificate (at minimum 8-hour basic certificate)
• A 40-hour advanced First Aid certificate (i.e. Occupational First
Aid Level II), or an NLS lifeguarding certificate
• A Class 5 Driver’s License
• Applicants for this position must have been student in the last
academic year and intend on returning to full time studies in the
fall)
• Additional certifications are considered to be assets. Examples:
Class 4 Driver’s License, certifications in paddling, rock-climbing,
and outdoor recreation & leadership
• Educational background with special relevance include: Forestry,
Environmental Sciences, Outdoor Recreation, Education
Level of compensation will be discussed during the interview phase of
recruitment.
