Conservation Halton
is a community based environmental agency that works in partnership with
watershed munici
palities and the Province of Ontario to protect the natural
environment. We also manage a number of parks for education and
recreation including Glen Eden Ski & Snowboard Centre, Crawford Lake, Mountsberg
Conservation Area, Rattlesnake Point, Mount Nemo, and Hilton Falls.
The Stewardship
Technician is responsible to the Watershed Stewardship Coordinator. The
Stewardship technician is responsible for fostering stewardship and conservation
within the Cootes to Escarpment Eco Park System by implementing activities of
the Hamilton-Halton Watershed Stewardship Program (HHWSP), a 20 year
partnership program of Conservation Halton and Hamilton Conservation
Authority. The HHWSP encourages, empowers and assists private landowners
in their role of protecting, enhancing and restoring the natural features of
the land they own.
Responsibilities
- Familiar
with Cootes to Escarpment Eco Park System and its partner organizations,
Conservation Authority watershed plans and environmental monitoring
reports that pertain to the Cootes to Escarpment Eco Park System, Hamilton
Harbour Remedial Action Plan, Hamilton Harbour Watershed Fisheries
Management Plan - Contact
urban, near urban, rural, non-farm, farm, and corporate landowners to
encourage awareness, creation, protection and conservation of natural
features and negotiate voluntary stewardship agreements - Contact
urban, near urban, rural, non-farm, farm, and corporate landowners to
identify, negotiate, research, develop and implement fish and/or wildlife
habitat rehabilitation projects and water quality improvement projects - Pro-actively
contact landowners through the development and implementation of targeted
outreach initiatives to address environmental issues - Respond
to landowner inquiries for stewardship services - Coordinate
and manage events for volunteers of all ages and backgrounds during
rehabilitation projects and ensure volunteers receive on-site safety
instructions/training. - Develop
and implement education outreach and communications initiatives and
materials to create awareness about environmental issues and to educate
residents on recommended land and water stewardship practices - Deliver
grant programs to landowners under the HHWSP’s Hamilton-Halton Water
Quality and Habitat Improvement Program - Collaborate
with like-minded conservation organizations in the delivery of education
and outreach programs and if applicable in the development of
rehabilitation projects or volunteer events - Represent
the HHWSP on various committees and at local community events to ensure
that HHWSP, Conservation Halton and Cootes to Escarpment Eco Park System
interests are addressed, provide input from a Stewardship perspective, and
provide HHWSP, Conservation Authorities and Cootes to Escarpment Eco Park
System information to the community - Record
and assist with the maintenance of statistics associated with landowners
contacted, stewardship agreements, fish and/or wildlife habitat
rehabilitation and water quality improvement projects and monitoring by
maintaining data in the Stewardship Landowner database and applicable
spreadsheets - Coordinate
and facilitate landowner events such as annual Watershed Stewards
Appreciation Day, annual Award Ceremonies and other events such as
presentations, landowner workshops, tours promotional information products - Other
duties as assigned
- University
degree in biology, ecology, geography, fish and wildlife management or
equivalent college diploma(s) - Excellent
oral, written communication and negotiating skills including effective
report writing skills for both technical and non-technical audiences - Effective
presentation and communication skills - Efficient
problem solving, multi-tasking and creative thinking skills - Experience
in the field of voluntary private landowner stewardship - Knowledge
of local ecosystems, including species at risk, vulnerable habitats, land
management techniques, principles and applications, including tax
incentive programs - Experience
working with, urban, near urban, rural, non-farm, farm, corporate
landowners negotiating and planning voluntary beneficial management
practices and other voluntary conservation and rehabilitation measures to
improve fish and wildlife habitat and water quality. - Basic
knowledge of bioengineering techniques, methodology and principles - Experience
in negotiating, designing, planning and implementing rehabilitation
projects that involve bioengineering - Knowledge
and understanding of regulations and legislation associated with all
levels of government (federal, provincial and municipal) in order to guide
landowners throughout the permitting processes needed to implement the
voluntary restoration projects on their properties - Experience
in GIS software and MS Office, with emphasis on MS Access. - Valid
driver’s license
Compensation
- Hourly
rate is $27 per hour based on a 35 hour work week
