The Secretariat of the Haida Nation is seeking an individual skilled
in information and data collection, management and analysis to join
the Haida Oceans Technical Team, a small group of professionals,
located in both Skidegate and Massett, Haida Gwaii, BC. Under the
authority of the SHN Administrat

Planning Manager, the Marine EBM Monitoring Coordinator will assist in
collection, management and analysis of a wide range of marine
information and data to support implementation of a Haida Gwaii Marine
Plan that is based on Ecosystem Based Management (EBM).

To qualify for this position, you will have good organizational and
data management skills and previous experience working with
communities, organizations or other groups. You will hold a Bachelor’s
degree, Associates degree or Diploma in natural resource management,
fisheries and aquaculture, or a related discipline with a minimum of
two years related experience. You may still qualify if you have an
acceptable combination of education and experience working with First
Nation’s organizations and communities.

CHN Marine Planning / Haida Oceans Technical Team

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Title: Marine EBM Monitoring Coordinator
Department: Council of the Haida Nation Marine Planning
Location: Haida Fisheries Program, Old Massett or CHN Office, Skidegate

Background:

The Haida Nation is involved in four marine planning initiatives
around Haida Gwaii: the Marine Planning Partnership (CHN-BC); SGaan
Kinghlas-Bowie Seamount MPA (CHN-BC); and the Pacific North Coast
Integrated Management Area Initiative (First Nations-DFO-BC) and Gwaii
Haanas (CHN-Parks Canada-DFO). The Haida Oceans Technical Team
provides technical support to each of these processes as required. The
development and implementation of an Ecosystem Based Management
approach is one of the priority outcomes of current regional and
sub-regional marine planning initiatives.

The EBM Monitoring Coordinator will report to the CHN Manager for
Marine Planning and be a member of the Haida Oceans Technical Team.
This is a full-time term position (35 hours per week) for a period of
18 months. The CHN may offer to extend the position beyond this term
subject to funding and other considerations. Salary will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Qualifications:

Requirements include the following:
• A Bachelor’s degree, Associates degree or Diploma in natural
resource management, fisheries and aquaculture, or a related
discipline with a minimum of two years related experience or an
equivalent amount of post-secondary education and experience.
• Good data and information analysis, collection and management skills
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to work productively in a team
environment
• Motivated and ability to work independently on projects with
periodic reporting
• Knowledge of marine resources and marine ecosystems
• Proficient with computers and data management programs
• Experience working with First Nations and knowledge of First Nations
communities and culture will be an asset

Duties and Responsibilities

The Marine EBM Monitoring Coordinator will be responsible for the
following duties:
• Assist with developing and implementing Ecosystem Based Management
(EBM) monitoring systems focusing on the Haida Gwaii marine
environment
• Establish, manage and maintain marine databases related to
ecological, social and cultural records including collecting data from
other agencies, updating files and preparing periodic data reports
• Prepare narrative and data reports based on database records and
related information
• Assist with coordinating data collection and reporting and
development of partnerships
• Assist in development of monitoring plans that capture quantitative
and qualitative data to report on EBM indicators
• Assist with data analysis and interpretation
• Build capacity of staff and local communities in EBM monitoring
techniques including data collection, data management, and evaluation
methods
• Develop reporting templates that facilitate the management of information
• Prepare summary reports on EBM monitoring programs in Haida Gwaii on
an annual basis or as required
• Organize and coordinate workshops with partners and other
stakeholders to review and develop work plans
• Prepare written and verbal reports to the Project Manager or a
designate on a weekly basis at minimum
• Other duties as necessary
