sustainable food systems.

The sales of produce from the UBC Farm provide a significant source of
operating funds for the Centre and for many of its community-based,
educational programs and initiatives. Working in a dynamic, team
environment, the Sales Assistant will report to the CSFS Sales
Coordinator and will play a key role in coordinating the sales of UBC
Farm produce at our weekly Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday markets so
that the Centre can continue to support day-to-day operations and fund
its community-based educational programs.

The Sales Assistant is a full-time (35 hours/week, Tuesdays to
Saturdays), hourly paid position from May through October, with the
possibility of an extension with reduced hours into December. Work on
Tuesday evenings will be required through the end of October.

Responsibilities
• Oversees the set-up and sales of the UBC Farm market stand at the
Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday markets.
• Ensures the market stand is aesthetically appealing and contains
appropriate and accurate UBC Farm informational material.
• Provides produce information in a friendly and informative manner
while interacting with market customers.
• Helps ensure that staff, volunteers and practicum students follow
proper food safety procedures.
• Maintains communication with customers in person, and via phone and e-mail.
• Collects payments and maintains good sales records for all markets;
skills in basic data management and bookkeeping are assets.
• Oversees and coordinates volunteers at the markets.
• Assists with deliveries of produce to restaurants as required.
• Assists with field work as required, especially harvest and
post-harvest handling of produce.

Preferred Qualifications
• Excellent customer service and communication skills (both written and
verbal).
• Self-motivated, highly adaptable, able to identify and prioritize
tasks with minimal supervision.
• Strong organizational and computer skills (intermediate level Excel
experience).
• Trustworthy, experience with money handling or cashiering is an asset.
• Demonstrated ability to work quickly, efficiently and calmly in
high-stress settings.
• Excellent interpersonal skills; able to work both independently and
within a high-energy team environment.
• Able to work quickly and efficiently for occasional long hours in
any weather and bring tasks to completion under tight deadlines.
• Able to communicate with the general public with diplomacy and tact
as a representative of the UBC Farm.
• Good group leadership skills, particularly in a volunteer coordination role.
• Knowledge of local and organic agricultural production practices and
trends is an asset.
• Familiarity with and commitment to the vision and mission of the UBC Farm.
• Must be in good physical shape and must be able to lift and carry
approximately 40 lbs. Valid driver’s license required. Access to a
cell phone is an asset.
• Food Safety, Level I is an asset.
• Preference will be given to candidates with some organic farming or
gardening experience.

Position Details

Start Date: May 5th, 2015 or May 19th, 2015

This is a seasonal, full-time position (35 hours/week) from May
through October, with the possibility of an extension at reduced hours
into December.

Wage: $14.23 – $15.00 per hour depending on experience.

The work week for the Sales Assistant is Tuesday to Saturday (with
required work on Tuesday evenings through the end of October). The
applicant must be prepared to work occasional long days with early
starts.
