Nisga’a laws as well as federal and provincial laws.

About the Location

Gitlaxt’aamiks, also known as New Aiyansh, is a Nisga’a village in the
heart of the Nass Valley in British Columbia, Canada. As one of four
Nisga’a villages, it is considered the “capital of the Nisga’a
Nation.”

Located on BC’s rugged northwest coast, and just 97km north of
Terrace, Nisga’a Lands are blessed with soaring mountains, dramatic
lava beds, picturesque fjords, and thriving rivers and streams. The
natural beauty of Nisga’a Lands is complemented by the Nisga’a
Nation’s rich cultural traditions. There is a wealth of activities for
you to enjoy, including fishing, hiking, cross-country skiing,
snowmobiling, ATVing, and much more!

The Kitimat-Terrace Regional Airport is the largest in the area with
several direct daily flights to Vancouver, as well as flights to a
host of other Northwestern communities. Terrace is served by daily,
direct flights from Vancouver by Air Canada Jazz, and Hawkair &
Westjet. Flying time is under 2 hours from Vancouver.

About the Opportunity

Currently, NLG is seeking an Enforcement Officer to join the group in
Gitlaxt’aamiks (also known as New Aiyansh) in beautiful British
Columbia.

As the Enforcement Officer, you will be responsible for implementing
the enforcement of Nisga’a laws relating to fish, wildlife, and
forestry matters on Nisga’a Lands, including the Nisga’a Fish and
Wildlife Act, the Nisga’a Forest Act and the Nisga’a Offence Act, and
any and all regulations made under those Acts.

In order to support your ultimate goal, you will take ownership of the
following responsibilities:
• Aiding in developing action plans to resolve specific issues of
non-compliance with Nisga’a Law
• Reporting on violations of Nisga’a Law and implementing
administrative processes required for processing violations of Nisga’a
Law;
• Preparing briefing reports and summaries of work conducted in the
field or otherwise;
• Preparing detailed reports with recommendations to Nisga’a Lisims
Government management and legal counsel outlining proposed resolutions
to issues of non-compliance with Nisga’a Law;
• Advising and assisting legal counsel in carrying out prosecution
actions in accordance with Nisga’a Law;
• Assisting in the education of the Nisga’a Nation, Nisga’a citizens
and the general public on compliance with Nisga’a Law;
• Under the supervision of NLG management, participating in
discussions with local government and stakeholder groups to promote
local involvement in the enforcement of Nisga’a Law on Nisga’a lands;
and
• Providing support for implementation of any agreements between NLG
and the federal government and/or provincial government in respect of
the enforcement of Nisga’a Law on Nisga’a lands.

The successful applicant will preferably have a university degree or
college diploma in natural resources, law enforcement or renewable
resources management. In support of your qualifications, you must have
at least 2 years of related work experience in natural resources, law
enforcement, conducting inspections to monitor compliance with
regulations and standards, investigations of non-compliance is
strongly recommended. Enforcement, Investigations and related
certifications are highly preferred, but not required, as is training
in Conflict Resolution.

As an excellent communicator, both in written and verbal situations,
you must be skilled in developing and maintaining effective
relationships with law enforcement agencies, government agencies, and
other associated stakeholders.

In this role, you will need to be a physically fit individual who is
able to work 80% in the field (in variable weather conditions), and
20% in the office.

Please note, you will be required to have a valid Class 5 Driver’s
License and will need to provide a driver’s abstract. NLG provides
great training opportunities for staff, however related certificates
and qualifications, such as safety courses, first aid and PAL, will be
an asset.
