Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), the leader in wetland conservation, is
seeking a Remote Sensing / GIS Specialist to primarily oversee the
classification of boreal wetland mapping projects, and secondarily to
provide limited GIS technical support (i.e., analytical, cartographic
and database management) specific to various GIS projects and program
support needs. The Remote Sensing / GIS Specialist will be responsible
for undertaking the classification of v
arious wetland mapping
projects, and to a lesser extent managing GIS project components,
participating in partnership development activities, and providing
advanced technical and analytical services required to support DUC’s
vision and strategies. The position located in Edmonton, Alberta will
report to the Boreal GIS Manager commencing on the preferred start
date of May 1, 2015.
As a member of the Boreal Program team you will provide Remote Sensing
and GIS technical expertise and leadership to internal clients while
collaborating with external partners to meet user needs and implement
Remote Sensing and GIS project components. The candidate may also
collaborate with other Regional and National GIS team members on
projects requiring specific expertise.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Classification of boreal wetland mapping initiatives in accordance
to internal protocols and standards
• Assisting in helicopter or fixed wing field data collection and
assisting in managing field logistics
• Oversee the management of data requests, solicitation of data, and
all data use/licensing agreements
• Oversea potential research and development projects as they related
to the development of wetland classification/inventory
• Help design and implement Remote Sensing projects and products in
consultation with staff and partners to meet user needs
• Compile project reports and proposals as required
• Identifying, gathering, analyzing, and integrating spatial data from
internal or external sources
• Creating maps and graphs for presentations, technical papers, or reports
• Oversea the compilation of wetland inventory project metadata and
other documentation
Qualifications
You possess a minimum of a university degree in Geography (Remote
Sensing-GIS) with an environmental science background (preferably
ecology) and have a minimum three years’ experience using eCognition,
Erdas and ESRI GIS (ArcGIS) software.
• Solid understanding and experience working with eCognition and Erdas
image analysis software
• Solid understanding and experience working with ESRI ArcGIS and
associated extensions
• Understanding of Landscape Ecology background or prior experience
with wetland ecosystems
• Solid understanding of Microsoft Excel and Access
• Experience working with Landsat TM imagery and LiDAR data
• Excellent cartographic skills in developing various communication
delivery products
• Experience working and communicating with diverse groups of people
in dynamic settings
• Strong data management skills, experience in developing and managing
contracts
• Proven knowledge of geographic (geo-processing) and cartographic
principles (projections and datums)
• Working knowledge of biophysical habitat inventories
• Excellent oral/written communication and presentation skills
• Ability to work independently and in a team setting
• Good time management skills
• Ability to work on multiple projects, set priorities, and meet rigid
deadlines
• A valid Canadian driver’s license is required
