Based in Bangkok with four field offices in Thailand
and Malaysia, the IRC Resettlement Support Center (RSC) assists persons
throughout East Asia seeking permanent resettlement in the United States.
Operating in seventeen countries, the RSC prepares refugee applications for the
U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, provides information to resettlement agencies
about arriving refugees and offers cultural orientation training to those
refugees bound for the U.S.

Job Overview/Summary:
The Staff Interpreter will provide operational support
to all departments in providing language support services for applicants to the
US refugee resettlement program. The Staff Interpreter will act as an
interpreter of oral statements given in Burmese/Rohingya languages into the
English Language and vice versa for RSC Prescreen interviews, Department of
Homeland Security (DHS) interviews and for Cultural Orientation training.
Additional responsibilities may include assisting in the training and mentoring
of other interpreters and written translation work.

Language screening and formal testing may be required
as part of the interview process.

Major Responsibilities:
- Act as an interpreter during RSC assignments for
prescreen, US immigration interviews, and post-processing appointments. - Serve as a backup interpreter for Cultural
Orientation, off-site assignments and regional circuit rides, as needed. - Translate documents from at least one of these
languages: Burmese/ Rohingya to English and vice versa. Knowledge in more
than one language is preferred. - Assist with training and mentoring of new
interpreters as needed. - Act as the focal point for incentive interpreters
on RSC’s standards for interpreting and The IRC Way. - Assist the Interpreter Services Manager with
regular monitoring of incentive interpreters. - Perform other relevant duties as directed by
supervisor.
Job Requirements:
Education:
- Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent.
Bachelor’s Degree preferred, but not required.
Work Experiences:
- 1-2 years experience working as an interpreter
strongly preferred. - Experience working in Refugee resettlement
preferred but not required. - Experience working as a translator preferred.
Demonstrated Skills:
- Good organizational, coordination, and reporting
skills. - Able to handle confidential and sensitive
matters. - Able to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Maturity, positive attitude and experience
working under pressure.
Language and Computer Skills:
- Perfect command of Rohingya and excellent
knowledge and fluency in English is required. - Additional knowledge of Burmese, Malay or Urdu
dialects is strongly preferred. - Thorough knowledge of computer software (e.g.,
Word, Excel, Email, Internet). - The ability to type in Burmese is preferred.
Others:
- Able to travel to off-site assignments and work
in remote locations.
Working Environment:
Standard office work environment. Housing will be
provided for international staff, which includes basic utilities. You may be
required to travel for assignments within Malaysia and around the region. You
must possess a valid passport to enter Malaysia and be able to secure Malaysian
work authorization through the IRC.
