Reporting to: Interpretation Officer and Head of Education
Hours: 12 month contract; 35 hours/week, beginning April 13, 2015
Rate of Pay: $15.50/hour

Position Description:

We are searching for an enthusiastic and dynamic communicator who is
passionate about sharing nature, horticulture and environmental
sustainability content with others through the use of effective
interpretive educational programming. This Intern will work with our
Interpretation Officer, Head of Education, and RBG colleagues to
support the development and delivery of new interpretive programs and
materials, including signage, interactive displays, demonstrations,
audio tours, guided walks, and illustrated talks.

Responsibilities:
• Use knowledge of sustainable environmental practices, biological
diversity, natural history, and horticulture to develop interpretive
materials (e.g. signs, brochures, fact sheets, demonstrations,
displays etc.) for RBG’s cultivated garden areas and natural lands.
• Work closely with Horticulture, Natural Lands, and Events staff to
plan interpretation pertaining to each of these areas and events
throughout the season.
• Develop tools such as training materials, program plans and props.
• Assist in training of docents and summer garden interpreters.
• Plan and present guided tours, talks, and demonstrations to engage
various audiences.
• Fabricate, source, and maintain interpretive props and materials.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Outdoor work required in gardens and on trails of varying terrain.
• May be required to work some weekends and statutory holidays, with
compensatory time off in lieu.

Requirements:
• University or college graduate in horticulture, natural
science/biology/botany, environmental science, education, or related
field
• Good working knowledge of gardening, botany, and/or local plants and wildlife
• Excellent English oral and written communication skills and ability
to apply them to developing engaging interpretive programs for general
audiences
• Public speaking/presentation experience; French competency an asset
• Computer literacy in MS Office products including PowerPoint and Publisher
• Ability to work well independently and in a team environment
• A clear Statement of Driving Record and satisfactory Police Records
