Location: Salt Spring Island, British Columbia
We are an aspiring 6 acre permaculture farm on Salt Spring Island,
close to town and close to a large swimming lake. We are currently a
community of 6 (one infant and another on th
e way!) Our property is
partly forested, partly open, with intention to establish a
permaculture based food forest. We are seeking workers for our Sprout
and Mushroom business and to aid in establishing our permaculture
design and community vision. We are the only producer of fresh
shiitake and oyster mushrooms in the Vancouver Island/Gulf Island
region. We also produce a range of sprouts and microgreens that we
sell at farmers markets, restaurants and stores throughout Southern
Vancouver Island. The tasks are mostly oriented around harvesting
sprouts in our commercial kitchen. On farm days, we work together
outside on earthworks, landscaping and building projects, with the
opportunity to learn about permaculture design from a certified
teacher and to practice building skills with an experienced nat
ural builder.
Farm projects specifically lined up for this year include:
hugelkultur, swales and keyhole garden design, tree planting, guilds,
composting, humanure, outdoor mushroom cultivation and occasional
building projects.
Other areas of interest included community yoga, food preparation,
fermentation, music, dance, etc. and we encourage individual
initiative to facilitate exploration of these interests.
Season:
Beginning of April – end of September with options to extend on either end
Hours per week:
Approximately 40 hours per week, includes up to 2 Saturday market
shifts per month and rotating Tuesday market shifts.
Accomodation:
Covered tent platforms with common kitchen, solar shower, compost
toilets, wifi, telephone, and on-site washer/dryer
Meals:
We provide lunch on sprout/mushroom workdays. Preparing lunch on farm
days will be collectively rotated, with ingredients provided by us,
plus ample sprout supply!
Pay:
$700/month, plus full season bonus
