Arc Acres is offering a work-to-learn internship position for the 2015 season.

This seasons start date begins mid to late April through to mid October.

Hello, my name is Amber!

I own and operate Arc Acres in Manotick Station, Ontario. This is my
7th season practicing organic agriculture. I currently manage 2
intensive acres of market garden including fruit, vegetables, herbs,
and garlic. I finish 30 head of grass fed beef cattle using intensive
rotational grazing methods, and play with pastured pork and chicken,
shitake mushrooms, maple syrup and beekeeping. I am currently studying
permaculture and actively applying the approach to the business. Arc
Acres products are marketed through Community Supported Agriculture
(CSA) shares and 2 local farmers markets, both rural and urban.

I am looking for 2 passionate individuals who want to become organic farmers!

Do you have what it takes?
• Are you a team player and an independent individual?
• Are you willing to commit and give 100%?
• Are you weather and bug resistant? Can you live and work in the
seasonal conditions?
• Do you have a positive, pleasant, self-motivated personality? Do you
enjoy getting up in the morning and spending time in the field? (alone
or as a team)
• Do you have to ability to manage your own personal emotional needs?
• Are you enthusiastic about good food, hard work, and care deeply
about the earth?

I believe time, knowledge and wisdom are precious. I am looking for
folks who want to learn, and in exchange, work and help build Arc
Acres as a model farm and continue to share the knowledge! “Leaving
life better than what we found it!”.

The farm is located 15 minutes south of Ottawa. What once was a 3rd
generation, 240 acre dairy operation is now home to my father and his
partner, their herd of beef cattle, domestic pets, and my holistic
organic farming operation.

Selected interns will each have their own small cabin to live in
alongside our maple bush and main garden. The cabins have no
electricity. It is slightly glorified camping. Living with the basics.
Rustic yet real! We share a small communal cabin 10×20 that has been
transformed into a seasonal kitchen and deck to hang out on! We
prepare and eat most meals together as a team. There is access to an
unlimited amount eggs, meats and vegetables from the farm. There is an
outhouse and a hot outdoor shower.

I offer a stipend of $100/week. Each intern is expected to work
approximately 45 hours a week. Routines naturally work their way into
our weekly schedule. Majority of the work oppurtunity will take place
in the market garden. Fieldwork will consist of soil preparations,
seeding, transplanting, irrigating, weed and pest management,
harvesting, packing and distribution of weekly vegetables to CSA’s and
farmers markets. We tend to a small greenhouse and orchard. We use a 2
wheel tractor for primary soil preparations and assorted hand tools
for weeding! Some work is involved in the livestock management.
Chickens, pigs and cattle are part of our daily routine. Moving
temporary electric fencing and chicken tractors, feeding, watering.

I take part in a non-official CRAFT Ontario program run by local
farmers. It offers a once a month field day/tour with other farms to
see different approaches towards sustainable agriculture.

If interns want to explore their own experiments outside of the
workday, I gladly offer guidance and practical supplies.

There are bicycles to use for exploring, a small pool for hot summer
days and access to my farming library.
