The Markham Theatre Discovery Program provides live arts, education and
community outreach opportunities to the children and
citizens of Markham and
York Region. The program include three major projects: youth camps, school
matinees, and Ontario Dances along with visiting artists providing master
classes, workshops, lectures, drama camps artists’ residences and special
community events.
The Discovery Coordinator is to manage and administrate programs and operations
for the three main projects/programs (Camps, Matinees, Ontario Dances – role of
“animateur”), along with other activities. The coordinator help developing
arts, education/learning programs, and outreach initiatives with the goal to
increase public’s awareness and the appreciation of the performing arts and
with the objective to engage the various audiences to participate an attend to
Markham Theatre Discovery and Ontario Dances programs and performances. These
programs must be tailor made to the Markham community and relevant within the
context of existing events in the dance and performing arts community.
• Manage, administrate and assure smooth operation of the three main Discovery
projects/programs according to the goals and objectives of the Theatre business
plan.
• Develop a community outreach and promotional strategy and plan (includes some
copywriting) for Flato Markham Theatre Discovery and Ontario Dances
presentations.
• Coordinate Discovery programs, to liaise with various stakeholders, make
occasional presentations to students, organizations and community groups and
venues.
• To insure presence to all programs, including duration of all youth camps
(March Break and summer camps – July and August).
• Oversee the work of the Theatre’s Dance Presenter and Animateur relative to
the Ontario Dances program.
• Develop and maintain network and relationships with key stakeholders.
• Oversee and support the preparation of the Ontario Dances grant for the
Ontario Arts Council, to write a report summarizing the dance outreach and
Animateur activities, which includes recommendations for future initiatives and
improvements to the program.
• Through strategic leadership and programming ensures professional
presentation with satisfied stakeholders and program participants.
• Accountable for day-to-day operations under the guidance of the Operations
Manager and/or Theatre Manager, ensuring program activities are safe,
educational, inclusive, high quality and meets the Theatres’ overall goals.
Program Description (programs may change):
Camps: The March Break and Summer Youth Camps include the “Junior Stars, “Drama
Camp and “Actor’s Workshop” serving hundreds of children aged 6 through 16
years old.
Matinees: School performances at the Theatre are presented to all area
students, elementary through high schools. Programs are mostly provided by
visiting artists already planned to perform for a regular public performance or
by children specialized performing arts companies.
Dances seeks to increase the presence of live dance performances in Ontario
Communities and more people engaged, interested and invested in dance at a
local level in our province. Ontario Dances aims to reflect the range of
artistic practices in the dance community and to support excellence, from dance
classes and workshops to artists in residence to the presentation of dance work
from leading Ontario-based professional choreographers.
Activities:
• Attends all required staff training sessions and meetings.
• Attends all required programs/activities such as youth camp, performances and
outreach initiatives.
• Abides by all City of Markham policies and procedures.
• Responds to, resolves appropriately and reports any incidents/concerns/safety
or security matters to the Operations Manager immediately upon occurrence
Requirements:
Post secondary education in performing arts, arts administration and/or related
field.
At least five years previous experience in overseeing and coordinating programs
such as artistic and/or educational programs, community outreach initiatives,
in the performing arts sector. Previous experience in program delivery and
public speaking an asset.
Excellent knowledge of performing arts
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, who can present
professionally is essential
Knowledge of education and community outreach programs in the performing arts
Knowledge of Markham and York Regions as it specifically relates to the
cultural and educational sector is an asset
Must be reliable with the ability to work independently
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast paced, changing environment
Demonstrated computer skills to include Microsoft office programs
