Organization: Fresh Air Learning http://www.freshairlearning.org
Location: North Vancouver, British Columbia
Do you love playing outside?
Fresh Air Learning is hiring for a part time facilitator position.
This North Vancouver-based position
begins in late August 2015, with
training hours in spring 2015. The contract is for a one year term
with the possibility of part time work in future years, subject to
staffing requirements.
The Position
Fresh Air Learning is an outdoor program for preschool to
kindergarten-aged students that is based on the free play and
place-based learning philosophy of forest school. Forest school
involves child-led learning that connects children to nature through
play. The children visit the same forest sites over time, forging a
deep connection to place. In Fresh Air Learning, children play and
learn in the forest and on a farm. As a facilitator, you would be
responsible for working with an assistant facilitator and volunteers
as you play and learn with a group of ten children.
The Candidate
The ideal candidate has extensive experience playing and learning with
children of preschool and kindergarten age, particularly in an outdoor
setting. You are inspired by child-led learning philosophies and take
your cues from the children and their ever-changing outdoor learning
environment. Learning all of the intricacies of natural places excites
you, and you love being outdoors, no matter what the weather.
You are a leader, but you’re adept at stepping back to help the
children direct their own learning. You respond sensitively to the
needs of children and work to support children with different needs in
the program. You work to address the questions, concerns, and needs of
parents and other program volunteers.
The ideal candidate:
• Has a diploma or degree in Early Childhood Education.
• Has extensive experience working in a child-led learning environment
• Has experience working with young children in an outdoor environment
• Has experience working with diverse parent communities and in a
parent participation setting
• Is able to work outdoors in all weather for up to eight hours a day
• Is comfortable working with volunteers
• Has or is willing to acquire standard first aid.
• As part of our hiring process, we will require a current criminal
record check.
• Is available for training hours as of April 2015 (times and days to
be determined with current facilitators)
Availability and Hours
Our program runs four days a week. This position is for our Monday and
Wednesday classes. In the mornings, you would work with our threes
classes, and in the afternoons you would work with our four to
six-year-olds. Classes begin at 10 am on Monday and Wednesday and end
at 3:30 pm, with a one hour break for lunch. Facilitators are paid for
additional preparation and communication that takes place outside
these hours, for a total of 20 hours per week. Facilitators are also
expected to attend a monthly board meeting, which is generally held on
a weekend morning. The program runs out of two North Vancouver
locations – Lynn Canyon Park and Maplewood Farm.
The candidate will be available for interviews in mid-February and for
limited weekly hours from April to June to engage in training with our
current facilitator. Ideally, the candidate would be available to
co-lead our two-week summer camp at the beginning of July as well,
although this is not a requirement.
Compensation:
$21.68/hour plus 12% in lieu of benefits
Deadline: 5 pm on Friday, February 6th, with interviews to take place
the week of February 9th.
No phone calls, please.
