The Yukon Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society was
founded in 1992 by Yukon citizens committed to the protection of our
natural world (http://www.cpawsyukon.org). We are one of 13 chapters
of a 50 year old national organization, which enables us to bring
local and national communication tools and expertise to the table. Our
mission is to safeguard Yukon’s wild lands, waters and wildlife for
current and future generations, working with the public, First
Nations, government, communities and organizations to foster
appropriate and responsible use of our lands and waters.

As part of the CPAWS team, this position involves critical aspects of
the Peel Campaign, taking the lead in community organizing, event
coordination and some communications. Reporting to the Executive
Director (ED), the outreach coordinator will perform the following
major duties:

Community Organizing & Outreach (30%)

Responsible for relationship building, event organizing assistance and
information sharing in the Peel communities.
• Work with Peel communities through on-going communication and project support
• Visit communities to provide information updates and presentations
• As invited by First Nations, assist with planning and organization
of community-driven Peel events and projects
• Connect community people living in Whitehorse with events and
provide opportunities for participation

Event/Meeting and Project Organizing (30%)

Responsible for Peel Campaign event and meeting planning and
organization as well as being point person for Peel projects external
to organization
• Take lead organizing events and meetings
• Coordinate Fireweed Market outreach and table at events as needed
• Liaise with external Peel project leads providing communication and
organizing assistance

Communications (25%)

Work with the Conservation Campaigner to implement communication initiatives.
• Participate in communication/media strategy and planning meetings
• Maintain social media platforms (websites, facebook, twitter) and
Peel update emails
• Design and produce campaign materials
• Design and produce semi-annual newsletters
• Work with CPAWS National staff in conservation planning and
communications as required
• Participate in external planning and policy initiatives
• Participate in weekly staff meetings
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

Other (15%)

Qualifications/competencies:
• Post secondary education in related field with relevant work
experience (degree in conservation or communications preferred)
• Experience working in a cross-cultural environment
• Considerable social media and event coordination experience
• Excellent writer and communicator
• Strong presentation and facilitation skills
• Must work well as part of team and individually with willingness to
respond quickly and flexibly to changing events and work assignments
• Comfortable taking initiative and willing to juggle and prioritize a
variety of important tasks
• Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to develop and
foster enduring relationships in community, government, and non-profit
sector
• Positive, results-oriented, problem-solving approach
• Proficiency working on Mac with microsoft office suite, adobe
indesign and social media platforms
• Ability to travel and work some evenings and weekends as required

Position: 32 hours/week in Whitehorse, Yukon

Compensation: Wage is $24–$27/hr (commensurate on experience)

There is potential for continued employment within the organization as
we look to build long-term capacity.
