The Coordinator, Major Gifts assumes a significant role in the
coordination and delivery of fundraising and communications activities
to further the mission of the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Working
closely with the Manager, Major Gifts, Ontario Region, the incumbent
plays a key role in supporting sub-regional Program Directors;
conducting prospect research and maintaining Raiser’s Edge Database
for Ontario donors. As a member of the Ontario fundraising team, the
Coordinator, Major Gifts, mentors other staff in donor recognition and
stewardship, and ensures that sub-regional development and
communications activities conform to national standards and policies.
These responsibilities are carried out within assigned development
department, sub-regional and project-related expense budgets.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Project and Program Fundraising
Achieve annual fundraising targets to meet goals set with the Manager,
Major Gifts, and the appropriate Program Director for the assigned
projects as laid out in the annual regional business plan, and as
determined during the year as opportunities arise, by:
• Providing fundraising and communications support to sub-regional
Program Directors;
• Meeting personally, telephoning, and otherwise corresponding with
donors and prospects as assigned by the Manager, Major Gifts and/or
Program Director;
• Drafting stewardship letters, event invitations, acknowledgement
letters, and other general correspondence to donors;
• Preparing presentation materials, developing strategy, and attending
requests for funding meetings with donors;
• Preparing or coordinating required interim and final reports for donors;
• Following established guidelines, support the Manager, Major Gifts,
and the Program Directors in designing and ordering property signs and
plaques to install at properties;
• Organizing small group tours of NCC properties;
• Occasionally coordinating large but targeted mailings related to
particular Ontario property or sub-regional program;
• Understanding the importance of documenting donor interactions in
order to create individuated relationship plans and maintaining donor
records in Raiser’s Edge;
• Conducting prospect research and identifying individual, foundation
and government prospects; and,
• Researching, writing, designing and/or coordinating letters of
inquiry and proposals to foundations and government programs.
2. Report and Proposal Writing
Support the Manager, Major Gifts, and sub-regional Program Directors to:
• Write and submit timely reports and proposals to donors; and,
• Track donor reports and proposals properly using Raiser’s Edge.
3. General Administration and Support
• Provide administrative and other support as required, including
fielding general enquiries from donors, potential donors, and
volunteers;
• Assist with the completion of property closing paperwork;
• Prepare expense forms and credit cards statement submissions as required;
• Maintain timely electronic notes of all communications with or about
donors and prospects; and,
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager, Major Gifts.
Skills and Aptitudes:
• At least three years of fundraising experience, preferably in a
major gift capacity;
• Exceptional verbal and written communications skills including a
proven track record in public speaking and small interpersonal
meetings;
• Demonstrated successful experience in a development and/or
communications role, including proposal writing, media relations, and
marketing;
• Resourceful and independent, yet comfortable working within the
framework of an integrated development program;
• Excellent ability to manage a diverse range of assignments with high
proficiency and superior attention to details;
• A strong sense of self-confidence, particularly when dealing with
high-level supporters and members of the media;
• Strong project management skills with a demonstrated ability to
prepare and manage timelines, goals and expectations wisely;
• Solid interpersonal and customer service skills as this position
will interact with donors, volunteers, board members, and the public;
• A self-starter, with strong motivation to take initiatives and to
adjust to changing priorities and meet deadlines;
• Ability to support a decentralized delivery of organizational goals
and objectives;
• Works well under pressure;
• A commitment to handle sensitive/confidential information
appropriately and with discretion;
• Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint;
• Working knowledge of databases, including Raiser’s Edge;
• Excellent ability to create, organize, and maintain effective and
efficient record keeping systems;
• Ability to obtain pertinent information from a variety of sources;
• A demonstrated awareness of conservation issues in Ontario;
• Understanding of and commitment to the role and mission of The
Nature Conservancy of Canada;
• Ability to work/travel within a flexible schedule, including
occasional weekends and evenings; and,
• A valid Ontario Drivers’ Licence is a necessity.
