Job Description:

The technician will carry out fieldwork aimed at assessing how
disturbance from mountain pine beetle (MPB) infestation and linear
features affect caribou habitat use and behaviour. Specifically, the
successful applicant will carry out field surveys of seismic lines,
roads, and pipelines as well as forest patches at different stages of
re-vegetation and MPB infestation to assess human and animal use and
to quantify caribou and bear food availability. The technician will
work as part of a two person field crew based out of remote field
camps near Grande Cache and Manning, Alberta. Applicants should be
comfortable working in remote field settings, driving on poor roads
(gravel, mud) where extensive heavy duty truck traffic occurs, and
camping in all weather conditions. The applicant needs to be
physically fit and willing to work extended hours regardless of
weather conditions and insects. Applicants with knowledge of
vegetation sampling and strong plant and animal identification
  skills are preferred.

Essential Job Qualifications:
• A minimum of two years in a natural resources, forestry or wildlife
diploma/degree program
• A minimum of one season of related field experience
• Familiar with Rocky Mountain and Boreal forest plants, field
sampling methodology, and data collection procedures
• Organized, highly motivated and able to work in a team environment
comprised of people from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines
• Comfortable working in remote field camp for extended periods of time
• Comfortable working in adverse weather conditions and in remote
areas where bears are present
• Experience navigating with a GPS, maps and a compass
• Experience and proficiency operating quads and a 4×4 truck
• Valid Canadian drivers license or International drivers permit
• Valid first aid (Wilderness first aid preferred)

Salary: Up to $3000 monthly depending on experience. All expenses are
covered while in the field. Applicants eligible for Canada Summer Jobs
funding are particularly welcome.
