Founded in 1999, the High Park Nature Centre is a not-for-profit
organization that instills awareness, understanding and respect for
the natural world. We en
gage children, youth and families in the
stewardship of High Park’s significant natural areas through hands-on
outdoor environmental education. Our year-round programs inspire park
visitors to develop closer connections with nature in their city and
ensure a sustainable future for High Park for generations to come.
Position Description:
We are looking for an enthusiastic educator and nature lover to teach
our year-round outdoor programs for all ages. The successful applicant
will teach curriculum connected school programs, Summer, March Break
and Winter educational recreational camps and Nature Clubs for
children aged 3-16 as well as programs for babies (6 months to 3
years) and their caregivers. The successful applicant will also be
involved in our community outreach efforts include Family Nature Walks
and Special Events.
Responsibilities:
• Deliver high quality nature education programs and events relating
to outdoor education offering comprehensive educational experiences to
all Nature Centre participants.
• Prepare and organize the materials for each day’s program.
• Keep accurate records of program participation and program evaluations.
• Work with Program Coordinators to develop program plans and materials.
• Help prepare displays, provide content for promotional posters and
support the marketing and promotion of Nature Centre programs.
• Participate in general communications (e-mail and phone), booking
groups and completing related administrative duties.
• Train and engage volunteers in programming.
• Work closely with volunteers to create engaging and valuable
volunteer experiences, support volunteer tracking and evaluations.
• Liaises with community agencies, volunteers, user groups, the public
and others, as required
• Responsible for the day-to-day cleanliness and neatness of the
Nature Centre including caring for Nature Centre pets.
• Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
• Current Ontario Teaching Qualifications an asset.
• Graduate of a University or College program dealing with
environmental/natural science or outdoor recreation.
• A minimum 1-year experience working with children in
educational/recreational programs, preferably outdoors.
• Possesses natural history skills and knowledge of local ecology and
restoration.
• Ability to work with people of all ages, especially children and to
provide a positive learning experience for participants of all ages.
• Working knowledge of Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines and
successful development and implementation at one or more grade levels.
• Experience working with volunteers, interns and/or student teachers.
• Strong teamwork skills and an ability to work on independent projects.
• Excellent problem solving skills; creative and enthusiastic.
• Well-developed oral and written communication and interpretive skills.
• Proficiency in utilizing the Internet, E-mail, Microsoft Word,
Access and Excel.
• Current CPR and First Aid certificates.
• Current police reference check required.
Hours: F/T 37.5 hours per week
Wage per Hour: $14.00/hour
Start Date: January 26th, 2015 preferred
