About the Global Health
Corps Fellowship:

Global Health Corps is a one-year paid fellowship that pairs young
professionals with organizations (fellowship placement organizations) that
require new thinking and innovative solutions. We believe that great ideas
don’t change the world, great PEOPLE do! The fellowship begins in July 2015 and
extends through August 2016. Fellows engage in professional development
training, mentorship and thoughtful community-building, and continue to draw
upon their fellowship experience and the GHC alumni network as they build
careers of lasting impact.

Fellows are placed in
organizations in pairs – one international fellow and one local fellow from the
placement country – creating a fellowship team that is a central part of the
fellowship experience.

About the Fellowship
Placement Organization:

Centre for Youth Empowerment and Civic Education (YECE) is a non-governmental
organization established in 1997. It was formed with the aim of addressing the
problems faced by youth, orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi. The main
objective of YECE is to promote children’s rights, youth sexual reproductive
health and rights (SRHR) and youth empowerment through capacity building, advocacy,
community mobilization and communication for positive social and behavior
change. YECE’s vision is a Malawian society where children and young people are
protected, healthy and happy. YECE works with young people in traditional
authorities of Lilongwe, Dedza, Mangochi, Kasungu and Mchinji districts.

Fellowship Position
Overview:
The
Communications and Advocacy Fellow will play a key role in ensuring that YECE’s
programs are documented and publicized through available communication
channels. Along with the Program Officers and Community Facilitators, the
fellow will help generate articles for publicity, ensuring that the media is
mobilized to cover YECE activities. Furthermore, the fellow will be involved in
documenting and publicizing the published articles, case studies, and best
practices on a wide scale to ensure visibility of YECE programs. The fellow
will also help produce high quality and timely reports for submission to donors
and other relevant stakeholders.

Responsibilities:
Communications

  • Work closely with Program Officers to document and
    publish articles and reports
  • Develop and distribute Information and Education and
    Communication (IEC) materials in collaboration with the Programs Manager
  • Develop press releases and position papers on pertinent
    issues for children and young people
  • Develop social media e.g. Facebook and Twitter for the
    organization in collaboration with the Programs Manager
  • Responsible for production and airing of radio/ jingles
    and videos using appropriate channels as agreed and adopted by management
  • Responsible for documentation and publication of
    articles and other media such as videos on best practice, beneficiary
    stories, and other areas within communication

Advocacy

  • Support the development, review and implementation of
    YECE’s advocacy strategy
  • Alongside the Programs Manager, identify partners for
    advocacy work and build strong alliances and networks for concerted
    advocacy efforts and greater participation in policy dialogue
  • Responsible for mobilizing media to cover YECE events to
    promote visibility from time to time
  • Any other duties as may be required from time to time

Required Skills and
Experience:

  • Self starter and able to work under minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated leadership working with other team members
  • Ability to relate well with others (group dynamics)
  • Strong writing skills
  • Willing to travel to project sites and ability to work
    even during odd hours
  • Experience in advocacy, communications or working with
    the media

Preferred Skills and
Experience:

  • Bachelor or Masters in Communications or relevant field
  • Skills in lobbying and knowledge of global, regional and
    national policies on youth and children
  • Material development (Information, Education and Communication)
  • Skills in video making, graphic design, and other
    technical communications
