Environment Division
requires an
ENVIRONMENT SPECIALIST
(contract up to 1 year)
Qualifications:
• Graduation from a recognized university in Environmental Science,
Environmental Studies, Environmental Planning or related discipline
• Minimum seven (7) years experience in environmental management,
environmental sustainability or related field or an equivalent
combination of education and experience
• Minimum of three (3) years experience of equivalent combination of
education and experience in marketing, public relations and event
planning.
• Demonstrated project management, research and analytical skills in
environmental issues (such as, air quality, climate change, energy
conservation, water conservation, transportation-related environmental
issues)
• Ability to develop and implement environmental programs on a variety
of topics, including managing budgets, collaborating and partnering
with stakeholders, and understanding communication objectives
• Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills
including strong presentation skills, report writing skills with the
ability to liaise effectively with the public, elected officials and
outside agencies.
• Demonstrated leadership and team-building skills required
• Experience and understanding of funding mechanisms, including community
grants
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and with
little supervision
• Possess a strong network of environmental stakeholders
• Ability to take on a leadership role and be proactive at resolving
program or cross-departmental issues in a timely and effective manner
• Understanding of communication tactics, including social marketing,
to affect behavioural change
• Strong planning, organizational and problem solving skills
• Proven ability and proficiency using various computer applications
such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint.
• Knowledge of relevant Federal, Provincial and Regional environmental
laws, regulations, standards, policies and guidelines, including
local, regional, national and environmental
initiatives/trends/developments.
• Experience working within a municipal setting would be an asset
Duties:
Under the direction of the Director, Environment, this position will
provide technical support, guidance and program development to the
Corporation with respect to environmental initiatives.
Develop and coordinate various environmental programs and campaigns,
including creating program elements, implementing and monitoring
supporting outreach campaigns, keep program materials current, promote
the programs/campaigns internally and externally and measure and
evaluate successes.
• Provide technical support and strategic leadership to Environment
Division, the internal Environmental Network Team (ENT), management,
Leadership Team, Environmental Advisory Committee and Council.
• Prepare and deliver reports, presentations, plans, strategies and
policies, that support the City’s strategic goals, the Living Green
Master Plan and the City’s environmental policies.
• Assist in the administration of the environmental community grant
for community gardens.
• Plan and coordinate outreach efforts such as environmental community events.
• Assist in the management of the Environment Divisions social media platforms.
• Promote the City’s environmental programs to staff, senior
management, Council and external stakeholders to facilitate a green
culture both internally and externally.
• Represent corporate and environmental divisions’ interests on
various internal and external committees and partnerships.
• Attend a wide variety of meetings, provides input and direction,
comments on program plans and initiatives and communicates information
back to the Environment Division.
• Monitor and respond to issues raised by the Environmental Advisory
Committee, including attending monthly EAC meetings when necessary and
acts as one of the key staff positions that liaise with this committee
of Council.Assess environmental initiatives of all levels of
government, community organizations and the private sector.
• Monitor and make recommendations on local, national and global
environmental issues based on technical expertise.
• Assist Director in preparing budget requests for environment initiatives.
• Organize subject specific meetings and determines appropriate
participants based on technical expertise.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Salary: $73,205 – $97,607 (Grade F) – (Hourly Rate: $40.22 – $53.63)
