The Managing Editor
is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Metro Edmonton newsroom,
leading a team of reporters, columnists, freelancers and interns to deliver a
package of the day’s top local stories and breaking news both in paper and
online.
What you will do:
- Creating
strong daily story lineups for Metro’s target readership that includes
breaking and original news - Mentoring
reporters and interns to ensure content is written and presented in
Metro’s style - Liaising
with the National Deputy Editor and other Managing Editors to share
content and ideas - Managing
local online editorial content, posting breaking news, promoting content
on social media - Ensuring
all deadlines are met - Working
with Metro’s managing editor and associate managing editor night
production to proof local pages, accommodate breaking news
Who you are:
- Post-secondary
education in journalism or equivalent - At
least five years of experience in a daily newsroom - Three
years of experience managing a team of journalists - Knowledge
of CP style, libel and contempt of court law as it applies to newspapers
and web journalism - Experience
working with newswire services - Strong
leadership skills - In
depth knowledge of the local market and good news judgment - Established
connections to local newsmakers - Superb
editing skills - Ability
to multi-task - Thrives
in a deadline driven, team environment - Detail
oriented, conceptual thinker - Adaptable,
embraces change - Excellent
communication skills
