RESPONSIBILITIES
The Ryerson School of Journalism located within the
Faculty of Communication and Design is one of the most highly sought after
programs in Canada. Today, the School is home to 550 undergraduate students and
54 graduate students and demand for places remain extremely high. Students are
given the opportunity to gain hands on experience by helping to students help
to write and edit the The Ryerson Review of Journalism, a nationally


distributed magazine including features and investigations about the Canadian
journalism industry or have the chance to produce material in The Ryersonian
newsroom, which publishes all content online at theryersonian.ca. It produces
daily news and multimedia, a newspaper, and broadcasts several times a week.

The school is currently looking for an Editorial
Assistant to provide editorial support to the Editor-in-Chief of J-Source,
which includes following, selecting and reporting on news and articles about
events and relevant resources in the field of Journalism, through the J-Source
website and on social media. The successful candidate will also act as the
Associate Editor for J-Source, editing content and coordinating the
deliverables of volunteer editors and writers. Attends events and reports on
them as “live blogs”.
QUALIFICATIONS
•Successful completion of a post-secondary certificate
program in Journalism and a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience working as
a journalist in a news gathering environment is required, preferably via online
or multimedia avenues.
•Excellent written communication skills are required to write and compile relevant,
original content for the J-Source web site, to compile weekly e-newsletters and
newsletters, to moderate comments from readers on the site through the day and
to provide ideas to editors for their content and support.
•Excellent interpersonal skills and organizational skills are required to
coordinate the assignment of articles for J-Source on behalf of the Editor
-in-Chief and section editors.
•Strong time-management skills and flexibility are required to effectively
prioritize and ensure completion of assigned work, to change priorities as the
need arises and to work efficiently with minimal supervision.
•Excellent knowledge of word processing applications and Drupal or similar
content management systems is required.
•Demonstrated commitment to client service – specifically to students, staff,
faculty and external editors.
•A demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
environment.
