The Ontario Association of
Children’s Aid Societies (OACAS) has represented Children’s Aid Societies in
Ontario since 1912, providing service in the areas of government relations,
communications, information management, education and training to advocate for
the protection and well-being of children.
The OACAS seeks an experienced,
creative

communications professional to take responsibility for leading and
managing the organization’s public advocacy and media relations activities.
Reporting to the Director, Communications and Public Engagement, you will work
with colleagues and agency members to develop OACAS’s annual public advocacy, media
and public engagement priorities and plans. You will develop consultation
agendas, lead and co-ordinate the analysis and documentation of consultation
findings, and write and co-ordinate the development of key public advocacy
documents.

You will cultivate and manage
relationships with a broad range of media, monitor and analyze public
perceptions and media attitudes to key sector issues, and provide expert advice
to member agencies on public advocacy and media relations activities.
As a key member of the
Communications and Public Engagement team, you will support the work of OACAS
by collaborating, engaging and working across departments, within a
co-operative and accountable environment.
You have:
  • a
    University Degree, preferably in Communications, Public Relations,
    Journalism or Marketing or equivalent experience
  • a
    minimum of five years’ experience in communications in the not-for profit,
    NGO, or government sectors, preferably in public advocacy, media
    relations, or public education
  • experience
    working with news media and social media platforms and in creating,
    implementing and tracking social media initiatives
  • creativity
    and political acuity to develop messaging and tactics for public advocacy
    activities
  • superior
    written communication skills to write and edit engaging plain language
    public advocacy documents, news releases, backgrounders, etc.
  • highly
    developed strategic thinking, analytical and critical thinking skills to
    align media outreach with organizational strategic directions and
    priorities, to identify issues, assess their impact, identify options,
    recommend positions and to draft clear, concise issue and briefing notes
  • strong
    interpersonal, listening, and collaboration skills to create close working
    relationships with colleagues and member agencies, and strong relationship
    management and influencing skills to cultivate and manage beneficial
    relationships with a broad range of media
  • excellent
    planning, organizational, and negotiation skills to facilitate the
    development of consultation agendas and content, co-ordinate the
    post-consultation content analysis process, and co-ordinate the
    development of key public advocacy documents
  • ability
    to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and respond quickly and
    professionally under pressure and in crisis situations
  • excellent
    PC-based computer skills with proficiency in commonly used communications
    and marketing-related software
Child welfare experience would be an
asset.
Bilingual English/French would be an
asset.
