General Manager Position for Two Rivers Food Hub
The Two Rivers Food Hub is seeking an individual with a passion for
sustainable agriculture and a strong background working in dynamic and
entrepreneurial environments with management responsibilities to lead
our new Local Food Hub. She or he should have experience related to
food, agriculture or processing
operations. An understanding of
non-profit organizations would be helpful but is not required. This is
initially a part-time contract position moving toward full-time by
spring 2015. The Food Hub will be located in Smiths Falls, will
require a vehicle, and the general manager should expect to get their
hands dirty.
Principal Purpose: The General Manager will be involved in the
planning and start-up of the project, including developing operations,
facility planning, developing and executing a marketing strategy,
procurement, staffing, and the launch of the centre, which is planned
for the fall/winter of 2014. This new distribution and processing
centre will operate independently with a segregated facility, staff,
budget, etc. and will be branded with its own identity. The General
Manager will report to a Steering Committee. Although the project will
be a nonprofit operation that will be capitalized with philanthropic
support, it is intended to function toward sustainability with
revenues from fees and services, while not losing sight of the social
mission of supporting local agriculture and providing healthy food for
sale and preparation throughout the area.
Desired Skills and Experience
• Highly-motivated, self-starter.
• Knowledge of agriculture production, produce storage and handling,
food production and related quality control measures like Food Safety,
HAACP, GAP, etc.
• General business knowledge including understanding of business
accounting statements, managing & developing employees, labour laws
and other government required compliance.
• Proficient with computers and internet-based applications.
• Ability to delegate and multi-task under pressure.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with the whole value chain (producers, processors,
distributors, purchasers).
• Appreciation of a strong local food economy.
• An undergraduate degree in a related field is required.
• At least X years in executive leadership and organizational
management positions.
This is a contract position located in Smiths Falls, Ontario.
