Reporting to the
Managing Editor, and in consultation with all platform producers, the
Assignment Producers assigns journalistic staff to cover daily and long-term
stories on digital (online, mobile, social media); radio and television. The
position works closely with Radio Current Affairs producers to ensure
coordination of coverage. The Windsor newsroom is fast-paced with a high
degree of collaborative work assignments. The Assignment producer is essential
in coordinating Video Journalists and others to cover the daily news agenda
against deadlines for multiple platforms.
Plans, conceives,
organizes and develops the production and realization or program segments and
series across multiple platforms. This includes daily assignments and future
assignments; enterprise and original journalism; and stories told through a
diversity lens. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies,
standards and practices. The Producer is ultimately responsible for ensuring
stories assigned fall within these guidelines. The position requires wide
latitude for initiative, independent judgement and creativity. There is a daily
and ongoing requirement to co-ordinate the work of others; and to liaise with
colleagues across the CBC system (or partner organizations) around story assignment
and development.
As a key station
player, the Producer communicates effectively with staff in other departments,
proposes and develops projects and contributes to news and current affairs
program. This is a key role in ensuring the Windsor station reflects
Windsor content to both the local audiences and beyond.
Job Responsibilities:
•Assigns program
content, including researching, gathering, writing and vetting/editing for all
platforms. As required commissions writing and/or research
•Conceives and develops the news agenda for the plant, including same-day
stories, enterprise/original journalism; follow stories; series
•Assigns VJs for tv, radio, social media and the web
•Manages how stories appear online and how they will be developed throughout
the day
•Works with radio and television show producers (including regional radio
program) and helps to set priorities around coverage based upon resources
available at any given time in the day
•Monitors what competing news outlets are covering, answers emails and
phone lines regarding news tips
•Maintains a paper and digital day-planner and follow file
•Identify, develop and maintain contacts appropriate to the assignment
•In consultation with management, adjusts schedules and approves overtime when
required and within guidelines established by the local station management
•Participates in the look ahead meeting to identify stories to cover next day,
and in the weeks to come, and helps to design coverage plans for the same
•Assign resources including cameras, satellite feedtime and liaises with
network colleagues to assign resources for network hits, visual/audio
requirements etc including weekend radio news and NN hits
•Provides feedback and evaluation of story and program segments
•In collaboration with Business Unit manager, is responsible for exercising
budget authority
•Exercises Editorial responsibility as delegated by Management.
We’re looking for
candidates with the following:
•A University Degree
or equivalent combined education and experience
•Job requires a minimum of five years’ experience of which three (3) must
involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry which is directly
related to the area of assignment
•In-depth knowledge of local and national news
•Solid news judgement and journalistic skills, including written, broadcast and
digital application
•Proven ability to provide support to VJs in terms of story treatment
•Understanding of the various needs of radio, television and digital platforms,
ideally with expertise in more than one of these three platforms
•Demonstrated ability to develop meaningful stories and develop contacts
•Bilingualism is an asset
•An extensive knowledge of the Windsor marketplace and key leaders is a
significant asset.
•Must have the ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and
efficiently
•Deadline driven, works well other pressure individually and with the broader
team
•Ability to work extended periods of time often under the pressure of breaking
and highly technical news requirements, and still maintain a cooperative
relationship with colleagues
•Ability to coach and mentor developing journalists
•Ability to work flexible hours, shifts and overtime is required
•Ability to solve problems independently and in group discussions
•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
•The ability to work as part of the journalistic leadership team to co-create
plans for daily coverage and for series, programming specials and other
activities consistent with the strategic direction of CBC
•Open to new ideas and approaches
•Demonstrated ability to identify diversity content and how it can be developed
to support content gathering in the Windsor marketplace
•Strong organizational skills
