SISSA PhD Fellowships in Mathematics, Neuroscience and Physics in Italy

The International School for Advanced Studies
(SISSA) in Trieste, Italy, welcomes applications from young candidates soon
after completion of their undergraduate studies with a strong interest in
research (Mathematics, Neuroscience, Physics) even if without previous specific
experience. To be admitted to the School, candidates must be in possession of
Italian laurea or laurea specialistica/magistrale in a scientific subject or
university degree obtained abroad and considered equivalent to the
aforementioned Italian degrees by the governing bodies of the School (i.e.
M.Sc.). International students (non-EU citizens) can be admitted through a
selection based on academic and scientific qualifications only.

fellowship is offered in thirteen courses covering the three main research
areas of Physics, Mathematics and Neurosciences.
Course Level: This fellowship is available for pursuing doctoral degree.

-TOEFL, GRE, IELTS or other English proficiency certificates is not mandatory
but it will be very welcome. This will help the selecting committee evaluate
your knowledge of the English language.

Scholarship Description: The International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste,
Italy, welcomes applications from young candidates soon after completion of
their undergraduate studies with a strong interest in research (Mathematics, Neuroscience,
Physics) even if without previous specific experience. SISSA physicists are
engaged to bring new insights into the exploration of fundamental problems
involving physics at all length scales and to provide excellent educational
opportunities to the many talented students who enroll in SISSA’s PhD programs.
A variety of research groups are active in Neuroscience, spanning Cognitive
Neuroscience, aimed at understanding how the brain produces behavior, and
Neurobiology, investigating the molecular, cellular and integrative mechanisms
at work in the nervous system. The researchers of the Mathematics Area work in
geometry (algebraic, differential and noncommutative geometry, also with
applications to quantum field and string theory), in mathematical analysis
(calculus of variations, control theory, partial and ordinary differential
equations), in mathematical modelling (mechanics of solid and fluids, complex
and biological systems, multiscale analysis), in mathematical physics
(classical and quantum integrable systems and their applications), and in
numerical analysis and scientific computing (applied to partial differential
equations and to control problems).The Mathematics Area is involved in the
activities of two laboratories.
Duration of awards: Fellowships are offered for 3 years.
What does it cover? -Admitted candidates will be awarded a fellowship of the amount of €
15.010,32 gross (9,24% tax) for 3 years.
-Admission to the second year is subject to a Qualifying Examination at the end
of the first year. The fellowship may be extended for a fourth year subject to
approval by the School authorities and to availability of funds.
-A contribution towards living expenses of the amount of €100,00 gross per
month will be awarded (at the end of the academic year) to those who will
subscribe a registered rent contract.
-A contribution towards the expenses to be enrolled in the health insurance
system up to € 198,77 will be granted to non-EU students only.
-A contribution (70% of the amount of the fellowship) may be awarded to
students who should be forced to suspend their activity due to illness,
maternity or other serious reasons up to 5 months.
-The School may offer, to a small number of candidates not directly admitted to
the PhD courses, a post-graduate fellowship of 3.5 months (€ 1.000,00 net per
month plus contribution towards living expenses of € 300,00 gross per month and
travel allowance of € 1.000,00 maximum) in order to spend a period of
internship at SISSA and participate in the Ph.D. entrance exams that will take
place in Summer/Autumn.
