Scholarship Description: The International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste,
Italy, welcomes applications from young candidates soon after completion of
their undergraduate studies with a strong interest in research (Mathematics, Neuroscience,
Physics) even if without previous specific experience. SISSA physicists are
engaged to bring new insights into the exploration of fundamental problems
involving physics at all length scales and to provide excellent educational
opportunities to the many talented students who enroll in SISSA’s PhD programs.
A variety of research groups are active in Neuroscience, spanning Cognitive
Neuroscience, aimed at understanding how the brain produces behavior, and
Neurobiology, investigating the molecular, cellular and integrative mechanisms
at work in the nervous system. The researchers of the Mathematics Area work in
geometry (algebraic, differential and noncommutative geometry, also with
applications to quantum field and string theory), in mathematical analysis
(calculus of variations, control theory, partial and ordinary differential
equations), in mathematical modelling (mechanics of solid and fluids, complex
and biological systems, multiscale analysis), in mathematical physics
(classical and quantum integrable systems and their applications), and in
numerical analysis and scientific computing (applied to partial differential
equations and to control problems). The Mathematics Area is involved in the
activities of two laboratories.
