EcoParent magazine — a new, national print quarterly — is seeking self-motivated, organized, and eco-committed individuals to work on commission-based tasks. Basic computer literacy is a must (i.e. Microsoft Outlook & Word or equivalent), and transferrable experience is an asset. Go to

Advertising Sales
The chosen candidate(s) will develop productive relationships with potential advertisers, and ultimately book paid advertising for the magazine and website. The work will be done on your own time, in your own space, and without anyone breathing down your neck (provided you stay in touch and meet deadlines). While some client networking can be done by email, the telephone is still perhaps the most valuable tool in the salesperson’s arsenal, thus the successful candidate must be available to work at least some business hours each week.
Remuneration will be wholly commission based, which means that as relationships with more and more potential advertisers are built, the potential returns grow, and the necessary work to earn these returns diminishes. Early on, we can offer a commission of 25%, which is well above the industry standard. This temporary, higher than usual commission rate will help to offset the early challenges of developing a roster of clients, and will be re-evaluated on a yearly basis, with the expectation that it will drop down to a more typical rate once a solid base of clients has been developed.
We’re not interested in greenwashing. Clear parameters for eligible advertisements will be established and adhered to.
Distribution Development
We’re looking to develop a wide network of independent resellers: eco-stores and baby boutiques being the most obvious targets. Your job will be to contact these resellers and get our magazine into these stores. A set agreement has already been established, so there is no negotiation required. As with the ad sales position, this work is done in your own space, on your own time, so you set your own schedule. You must, however, be available during some business hours, as the telephone will be your most prominent tool.
Remuneration for this position will be on a per issue basis. For each issue that you help to find its way into a store, you will receive $2. So, if a store decides to take on 10 copies, you earn $20. You will be paid when the store has paid for the issues they have ordered. This is a position that will eventually burn itself out, as the $2 commission only counts for new orders. No royalties or fees will be paid to you for subsequent orders. But we’re a tightly knit group looking for hard-working, competent people to help us grow this publication to its full potential. If we like you, and what you do (and you like us and what we do), we’ll do everything we can to keep you busy, so that we don’t lose you!
Application Procedure
Submit a résumé and cover letter to the publisher, Sam Stedman, at sam@ecoparent.ca. These positions will remain open until filled, so don’t delay. Only those whom we’re considering will be contacted, and invited to participate in a live and/or telephone interview.
