Paediatrician Job Vacancy in Afghanistan

PAEDIATRICIAN – Mirwais Hospital – Kandahar / Afghanistan non family assignment
Function / raison d’être S/he works in collaboration with local counterparts for overall optimal management of paediatric patients in both the OPD and the ward setting. S/he actively participates in the organisation and
overall smooth running of the paediatric wards. S/he contributes to the development of plans of action with the Hospital Project Manager (HPM) and hospital team.

Main Tasks
• Conducts paediatric wards/admission department rounds with local doctors/GMA’s (General Medical Assistants) and students
• Manages emergency cases by direct involvement as well as simultaneous training
• Shares expertise and knowledge with local counterparts providing consultation and emergency response if required
• Teaches and advises the national doctors and nurses in appropriate clinical practises, even in situations when direct involvement by expatriate is necessary
• Participates in patient assessments and assists the local counterparts in drawing up treatment plan for the patient including appropriate documentation
• Establish cooperation with the surgeons on management of paediatrics surgical cases
• Evaluation and strengthening of diagnostic and prescribing done by GMA’s in the Out Patient Department (OPD) and the paediatric wards
• Ensures a standardised approach to treatment based on the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI)
• Implements appropriate teaching programs aimed at the professional development of local medical staff, GMAs and students
• Consults and supports the medical assistants in OPD with capacity building but not in the role of substitution
• Participates in medical meetings, formal teaching sessions and case presentations
• Analyses of weekly and monthly medical statistics including morbidity, mortality with analytical assessment

Selection requirements
• Paediatrician / General Practitioner with extensive experience in paediatrics
• Minimum 3 years of experiences in clinical paediatrics is required together with a diploma and /or an extensive experience in paediatrics
• Ability to adapt work and relate effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds
• ICRC / NGO experience and/or good knowledge of institutional mandates, policies and guidelines pertaining to the ICRC in general
• Experience in organisation of training / teaching students
• Ability/willingness to adapt to Afghan culture, security constraints and living restrictions in Kandahar, and to work in volatile environment
• Excellent command of English
• International driving licence (valid for manual transmission vehicles
• ready to accept unaccompanied posting (no family posting)

Minimum length of assignment: 6 months
