1.Purpose
The Centre of Excellence in Farm Business Management Masters Scholarships are awarded for the purpose of supporting postgraduate study and research in farm business management at Lincoln University and Massey University.
2.Number
The number of scholarships to be awarded in any year shall be determined by the Director of the Centre of
Excellence in Farm Business Management (thereafter referred to as ‘the Director’ ).
3.Eligibility
(1)Scholarships will be open to full-time students eligible to register for a research based Masters degree at Lincoln University or Massey University.
(2)A scholarship may be awarded to a person who is not eligible to register as a candidate for the thesis year of their Masters degree at Lincoln University or Massey University, provided he or she becomes eligible to so register by 1 March in the year following the award.
(3)The scholarship will lapse if the candidate is not registered for the Masters degree by the date established in 3(2) above or those established under special provision.
4.Selection Criteria
The scholarship will be awarded based on the following criteria:
(1)Academic Merit -emphasis will be placed on academic achievement in advanced level undergraduate courses.
(2)Research interests that align with the research programme of the Centre of Excellence in Farm Business Management.
5.Selection Committee
The scholarship shall be awarded by the Director on the recommendation of the Head of Department of Agricultural Management at Lincoln University and the Professor of Farm Management at Massey University (or their nominees or equivalents).
6.Tenure
Scholarships shall be tenable only for the period in which the student is engaged solely on a single thesis. In no case will tenure exceed a twelve month period.
7.Programme of Study
During the tenure of the scholarship, every scholar shall be enrolled as a full-time
student at Lincoln University or Massey University for the thesis year of a Masters degree.
8.Commencement
The tenure of the scholarship shall begin at the commencement of the semester immediately following the award.
9.Deferral/Temporary Suspension of Study
(1)No deferment is available for this scholarship.
(2)Once the scholarship has commenced, the Director, at his or her discretion, may
grant a temporary suspension of the scholarship, without emolument, for up to one year having taken into account the scholar’s circumstances and the progress of the study.
10.Payments
(1)The value of the scholarship shall be determined by the Director. The emolument shall be paid by monthly instalments in arrears, according to the tenure of the scholarship.
Note:The current value of the emolument is $25,000 for a twelve month period.
(2)The first payment shall be made once the student has commenced work on the research component of their Masters degree.
(3)In addition to the emolument the scholarship covers an amount equivalent to the New Zealand students’ tuition fee for the Masters degree at Lincoln University or Massey University, provided that the respective university’s contribution towards fees will be reduced by an amount equal to the sum available for fees from any other scholarship received by the student up to the value of the relevant New Zealand students’ tuition fee. This amount is payable annually by way of a credit in the scholar’s fees account.
11.Co-Tenure
(1)A scholarship shall be tenable with any other scholarship, bursary or award unless the conditions of the other award preclude it.
(2)Where a scholar holds other awards while also holding a Centre of Excellence in Farm Business Management Masters Scholarship, then the value of the scholarship may be reduced in circumstances to be determined by the Director.
12.Conditions of Emolument
(1)A scholar is expected to devote his or her whole time to study for the masters qualification.
(2)A scholar may hold a position of emolument while receiving a scholarship provided that he or she meets the University’s requirements for registration as a full-time student for the Masters degree.
Note: In order to meet the university’s requirements for registration as a full-time Masters student, a scholar may work no more than ten hours per week during the tenure of the scholarship.
13.Extensions
Under no circumstances will an extension be granted beyond the maximum tenure of twelve months.
14.Review of Progress
(1)The Director shall request from the Head of Department of Agricultural Management at Lincoln University or the Professor of Farm Management at Massey University (or their nominees or equivalents), reports on the scholar’s progress six months and twelve months after the commencement of payments.
(2)If the Director, at any time, is satisfied that the scholar is not diligently pursuing his or her studies; or is not working on an approved topic; or is not making satisfactory progress, then the Director may suspend or terminate any scholarship or require the forfeiture of any proportion of the scholarship emolument.
15.Concessions
The Director may relax or modify the application of any of these regulations in special circumstances or in order to avoid hardship to any scholar or candidate for a scholarship.
16.Research Outcomes
Under the Masters Degree regulations, students are normally required to submit a print and/or digital copy of their thesis to the university and/or faculty library. In addition, the scholar must submit a digital copy of the thesis to the Director.
17.Applications
Candidates shall submit applications no later than 30 November of the year preceding the award of the scholarship. Applications will be submitted on the form provided by the Director or the Scholarships Offices at Lincoln University or Massey University.
Application cannot be accepted before 30/08/2012.
