PhD student stress, neuroimmunology, spinal cord injury

Background
We offer a highly interactive and well-equipped environment at the host institute (see: www.biomed.uhasselt.be). The BIOMED institute was established in 1999 and conducts biomedical research in two core areas: neuro-inflammation and the development of biosensors. Basic and clinical research is organized in four strategic programs and much effort is put into academia-clinic interactions and academia-industry interactions for valorization of scientific findings. BIOMED employs approximately 130 persons including more than 50 PhD students.

Task description
The successful applicant will be working in a project on “Stress pathways in CNS injuries” with a special emphasis on thermic and psycho-emotional stressors. He/she will make use of in vitro and in vivo models to study basic mechanisms of stress responses in the context of CNS injuries. The project includes a broad spectrum of biochemical and neuroimmunological techniques such as cell and brain slice cultures, immunohistochemistry, molecular biology and behavior tests.

Profile
• highly motivated to work in a multidisciplinary team;
• particularly motivated and ambitious scientist;
• experience with CNS trauma models, behavior tests, immunology and electrophysiology will be greatly appreciated;
• excellent communication skills and a thorough knowledge of English (spoken en written).

Diploma
Candidates must have an officially recognized master degree in biological, (bio)medical or life sciences or equivalent with a molecular/cellular orientation. (or equivalent).

Final-year students are (likewise) encouraged to apply.

Employment
Appointment for a period of 2 x 2 years (with evaluation after 2 years).
