The Faculty of Law has an international orientation, which is reflected in its research and education activities. The Faculty conducts leading international research in five centers of excellence. It offers three Bachelor’s programmes and a number of Master’s programmes. With its 4000 students and 400 staff members, it is one
of the largest law faculties in the Netherlands. The Faculty is located in the center of Amsterdam.

Centers of Excellence
• Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance (ACELG)
The research focus at the ACELG is on the interaction of formal European law with legal and institutional practices. ACELG’s research programme is primarily a legal one but takes in addition an empirical and a normative perspective on processes of constitutionalisation and governance.

• Amsterdam Centre for Tax Law (ACTL)
The ACTL conducts research on ‘Tax sovereignty versus Globalization’, with a view to assess limits on national tax sovereignty and tax jurisdiction set by international and supranational law, on the basis of criteria such as level playing field, interjurisdictional equity, free movement of persons and capital, budgetary stability, and fair interstate policy competition. http://www.jur.uva.nl/actl

• Centre for the Study of European Contract Law (CSECL)
The CSECL aims to promote high-quality research in the area of European contract law. It understands contract law in a wide and functional sense, i.e. the law of economic transactions. Its research programme focuses on the interplay between the European, national and international laws of contract.

• Institute for Information Law (IViR)
The mission of IViR is to further the development of information law into a balanced framework that accommodates the needs and interests of the information society. • Amsterdam Center for Law and Economics (ACLE)
The Amsterdam Center for Law & Economics (ACLE) is a joint initiative of the economics and law faculties of the University of Amsterdam. The objective of the ACLE is to promote high-quality research in the fields at the interface of law and economics. The ACLE presently associates around twenty scholars in law and economics, ranging from full professors to PhD students. Its research program includes corporate governance & financial markets regulation, competition & regulation, compliance & enforcement, empirical legal studies, and endogenous institutions.

• Leibniz Center for Law
The Leibniz Center conducts research in the field of legal knowledge management. The aim of its research programme ‘A constructive and computational theory of law’ is to develop reusable components and structures, methods of implementation, evaluation metrics and diagnostics, and simulation theories, of law, for purposes of policy making and legislative drafting, effective public administration, and business compliance.

• Bonger Institute of Criminology
The research programme of the Bonger Institute focuses on the interrelation-ship between crime and criminal policy. It has three components: Developments in formal control in terms of law in action; Developments in nature and extent of criminal behaviour and Dynamics between policy and crime.

• Research Programme Constitutional Processes
The research group on constitutional law participates in the research programme ´Constitutional Processes: The Interaction between the National and the European Dimension´, that is part of the Research School Ius Commune. This programme focuses on differentiation and commonality in constitutional developments, the role of constitutional law in the development of European integration, and the intertwining of constitutional orders. Proposals on national constitutional parameters of EU economic governance, or on other topics within the scope of the programme are welcomed.

Tasks
• Engage in supervised scientific research that will result in a doctoral thesis;
• Present intermediate research results at international workshops and conferences, and publish them in proceedings and journals;
• Contribute to the organization of research activities and events, such as conferences, workshops and joint publications;
• Candidates may also assist in teaching on subjects relevant to the thesis in the Faculty’s curriculum.

Requirements
• Completed law degree with excellent grades;
• Excellent analytical, social and organizational skills;
• Excellent academic writing skills, fluency in English;
• Ability to work independently;
• Creative researcher and writer.

Appointment
The appointment will be either fulltime (38 hours) or 32 hours a week. The starting date is 1 September 2012. The appointment will initially be for 1 year. Extension of the contract to a maximum of four years is subject to satisfactory performance after the first year.

The gross fulltime monthly salary will be in accordance with the salary scales for PhD candidates at Dutch universities, i.e., ranging from € 2,042 in the first year to € 2,612 in the final year. Secondary benefits at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end of year bonus.
