Fixed-term (5 years) externally funded clinical professorship in Vascular Surgery with special emphasis on ultrasonic characterization of atherosclerosis

Applications are invited for a fixed five years externally funded clinical professorship in Vascular Surgery with special emphasis on ultrasonic characterization of atherosclerosis at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen to commence as soon as possible The professorship is combined with a consultancy at Rigshospitalet, The Abdominal Centre, Department of Vascular Surgery in the Capital Region of Denmark.

It is a requirement for appointment that the applicant is accepted for both the professorship and the consultancy. In order to be considered, the applicant must therefore send an application both to the Faculty (the professorship) and to the Hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the consultancy. This applies also to applicants who are already employed as consultants at the Hospital. Both the professorship and the consultancy will be financed by Rigshospitalet.

The professorship is related to The Department of Surgery and Internal Medicine, which is one of five clinical departments under the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Department coordinates teaching in anaesthesiology, surgery, urology, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, gastroenterology, hepatology, nephrology, cardiology, haematology, and clinical oncology, and its tasks are to facilitate research and provide teaching on scientific grounds within the specialties.

Job description

The professorship consists of:
• research
• research-based teaching with associated examination duties
• dissemination duties

The professor will be asked to manage research, provide guidance and supervise junior researchers, and will be involved in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training in different education programmes at the Faculty. The University determines the exact ratio between the different responsibilities and these may vary over time.

Qualification requirements
The professor must be able to demonstrate a high degree of original academic production at international level showing that he or she has contributed to develop an academic discipline. Emphasis is also placed on an ability to be in charge of research and other management functions, as well as communicating (research) knowledge to the public. An additional requirement is qualifications to provide research-based teaching.

Due to the job description mentioned above emphasis will be placed on the following professional and personal qualifications:
• Applicants should be a clinical specialist in vascular surgery
• Applicants must document a high level of professional practice
• Applicants must document a high level of original scientific production including ultrasonic characterization of atherosclerosis
• Applicants should document a continuous scientific development
• Applicants should document a high level of research management including research supervision at ph.d. level
• Applicants should be experienced in undergraduate teaching and research education as well as in the assessment of scientific work, lectures, exam clinics, exams, and other teaching
• Applicants must have good ability to motivate and inspire employees and colleagues

Terms of employment
For the professorship the appointee will receive a pensionable annual salary of DKK 172,744.99 (1 April 2010 -level). Additional salary supplements may be negotiated on an individual basis.
The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2007.
