DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITION
carrying out research for a fixed term from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2014.
MULTIDOM program will include three main research themes: 1) loads of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from soil and agriculture and the socially optimal management of the loads, 2) probabilistic analysis of the input and impact of DOM in the sea, and 3) environmental history of Baltic Sea region.
The successful candidate for this position will carry out research on cost-effective abatement of DOM loads and other substances impairing the quality of Finnish inland waters and the Baltic Sea. The main task is to collect the required data and to build up the research tools needed to optimize the allocation of abatement efforts and measures across sectors (e.g. agriculture, waste water treatment, forestry and peat production) and different parts of selected case study catchments. This will be achieved by integrating information about land use, present loads and the effectiveness and costs of alternative abatement measures with mathematical optimization. Main research question, to be studied in cooperation with other HENVI researchers, is to understand and to model the joint effects of nutrient and DOM loads to eutrophication.
The position is funded by the Helsinki University Centre for Environment HENVI and MTT Agrifood Research Finland. The doctoral student will have an employment contract with Helsinki University. The main work location is at the MTT Agrifood Research Finland, Viikki in close co-operation with the HENVI and Department of Economics and Management, University of Helsinki.
An appointee to the position of doctoral student shall hold a second-cycle degree and have an approved research proposal. Other requirements shall include the ability and motivation, as demonstrated in previous degree studies or otherwise, to pursue postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree according to the study plan and research proposal.
Qualified applicants should hold a masters or licenciate degree in a relevant field and have demonstrable experience in GIS and mathematical programming (Matlab or GAMS) and numerical optimization. The candidate should have abilities to work in interdisciplinary research team as well as have good interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent command in written and spoken English and Finnish is required.
The salary will be based on levels 1–4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance.
