Eligibility:
The position will commence in 2012, and applications are open to individuals of any nationality who have obtained their PhD within the last five years, and who are not older than 35 years. Applicants should have experience in conducting research involving human subjects, and experience in conducting epidemiological research will be a benefit, but not a prerequisite for the position

Scholarship Description: Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral research fellowship in the laboratory of Peter Kamerman, at the School of Physiology, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, to conduct research on the incidence of and risk factors for developing HIV-associated sensory neuropathy (HIV-SN) in HIV-positive patients starting tenofovir-based antiretroviral therapy. HIV-SN is a common cause of disability in HIV-infected individuals and has been strongly associated with the use of older antiretroviral drugs such as stavudine. This study will investigate the incidence of and risk factors or developing HIV-SN within the first year of patients starting the latest first-line treatment regimen, which substitutes tenofovir for stavudine.
