Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) is the national lobby, policy and marketing organization representing Canada’s 13, 000 dairy farms. We are currently seeking a professional to coordinate the development and communication of a sustainable development policy for milk producers. This is a full time permanent position located in Ottawa.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Policy and Strategic Planning, the Assistant Director of Policy and Sustainable Development will coordinate the activities of the Sustainable Development Task Force and take a leadership role in the development and communication of a Sustainable Development strategy.
Main Areas of Responsibilities and Tasks
• Coordinate the Sustainable Development Task Force’s activities;
• Participate in an inter-disciplinary team to develop and implement strategies to address key sustainability issues;
• Facilitate collaborative relationships with academics and other scientists to promote the use of innovative scientific research in the development of environmental policy;
• Promote advanced research and analysis in support of the development and testing of sustainable development strategies through the Dairy Research Cluster. Seek out available joint funding opportunities;
• Communicate sustainable development strategies and research results to target audiences, including milk producers, media, consumers and governments;
• Research, produce and publish dairy farmers’ initiatives to mitigate their impact on the environment;
• Research and develop educational programs and resources for Canadian milk producers;
• Monitor sustainable development initiatives domestically and internationally;
• Monitor and participate in the development of environmental regulations, including the establishment of producer policy positions relative to those regulations;
• Advise governments about the efficacy of environmental policies and standards for milk producers;
• Liaise and build relationships with organizations in the NGO sector working on sustainability issues and other industry stakeholders in Canada;
• Act as a spokesperson for DFC on general sustainable development issues.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in communications, environmental sciences or other related field is required;
• Master’s degree in a related field considered an asset;
• Minimum of three (3) years relevant experience;
• Ability to understand and communicate scientific theories, analysis and data in easily understandable terms, indicators and performance measures;
• Ability to work well with a team;
• Bilingual (English and French, oral and written) required.
