Start Date: As soon as possible
Duration of contract: 6 months

Founded in 1903, Fauna & Flora International (FFI) is the world’s longest-established international conservation organisation. Our vision is to create a sustainable future for the planet where biodiversity is conserved by the people living closest to it. We aim to do this through the conservation of threatened species and ecosystems worldwide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, based on sound science and take account of human needs. We operate primarily in developing countries where there is little capacity to conserve endangered and threatened habitats and species. We have become a trusted entity in the world of conservation. Today FFI is active in over 40 countries.

Working closely with local partners, the Africa Programme currently includes a broad range of species and landscape targeted conservation initiatives in Liberia, Guinea, DRC, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa and has programme offices in Monrovia, Kampala and Nairobi.

In 2010 FFI secured funding from the Norwegian Government (NORAD) for a 3-year project titled “Bridging the divide; empowering grassroots institutions to inform national REDD strategy development in Liberia through REDD demonstration projects”. The project aims to support the Government of Liberia to develop a national REDD strategy that aligns with the national Poverty Reduction Strategy and Forest Sector Reform process.

Our goals within this are to:
• Empower and enable government and civil society organisations to understand and engage in REDD strategy development, building from lessons learned on the ground from a pro-poor REDD demonstration project in Southern Liberia
• Disseminate lessons from FFI’s global REDD portfolio and this field component locally, nationally and internationally to inform Liberia’s view (and that of the international policy community) on a post-2012 climate change framework that includes a credible, comprehensive pro-poor approach to REDD

FFI is seeking an individual with an established international reputation in communications, education and public awareness. The successful candidate will have the strategic vision, leadership, and administrative skills to develop and implement a public education and awareness campaign on climate change and REDD+ in Liberia.

S/he will have a thorough understanding of REDD+ technical concepts and at least 3 years’ experience in environmental awareness raising, or related issues. S/he will have excellent communication skills and the demonstrable ability to engage effectively at all levels of government and civil society. S/he will have a degree or equivalent training or experience in a relevant discipline such as forest conservation, carbon science, social sciences and substantial experience in a related role.
