About the RCEN
The Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) facilitates cooperation and networking among non-profit, non-governmental environmental organizations across Canada and internationally. With over 600 member groups from rural and urban communities across the country, the network is made up of Canadians from the entire spectrum of career paths and interests. Our National Office is based in Ottawa, and Affiliate Networks can be found in each province and in the Yukon.

The RCEN is an independent, non-partisan organization. Our primary role is to support environmental NGOs by providing them with valuable networking, communication and coordination services.

About the Position
The Biodiversity and Earth Summit Intern, reporting to the National Caucus Coordinator, will work with the coordinator to support caucus activities this summer. The intern will aid the Biodiversity Caucus to establish the Friends of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Association by drafting scoping documents, membership criteria and explore funding opportunities. In advance of the Rio+20 Earth Summit in 2012, the intern will also research and prepare content for an Earth Summit webpage, coordinate an Earth Summit consultation event in Ottawa and promote youth participation in consultations nationwide.

Responsibilities:
• Support the establishment of the Friends of the CBD Association;
• Organize an Earth Summit consultation event in Ottawa;
• Research and prepare website content for Earth Summit webpage;
• Work in collaboration with RCEN Caucus Coordinator to:
– Manage the Caucus budgets
– Organize meetings and teleconferences
– Oversee general caucus communications
• Coordinate youth engagement in Earth Summit consultations nationwide.

Candidate Profile:
• University student who will be resuming studies in September in a related field;
• Excellent writing and verbal skills in both English and French;
• Demonstrated interest in environmental issues, especially biodiversity and sustainable development;
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage time and multiple projects;
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications;
• Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment and independently in a small, dynamic organization ;
• Strong affinity with the organization’s mission and activities.
