Centre for Sustainable Watersheds Job Vacancy in Canada for a Stewardship Program Assistant

Organization: Centre for Sustainable Watersheds Location: Portland and Gananoque River Watershed, Ontario

Position Location: 14 Water Street, Portland, Ontario
Length of Contract: 35.5 — 37.5 hrs/week, 10-12 weeks
Pay Scale: $10.25 – $11.00/hr

Position Purpose:
The successful applicant will contribute to the Gananoque River Watershed Project, working to raise landowner awareness of water stewardship principles and environmental impacts on the lakes within the area. Field work will focus on carrying out shoreline data collection on four lakes in the watershed (located northeast of Kingston), with subsequent creation of property stewardship reports based on the data collected. Other activities will include attending community events, delivering educational material, conducting surveys and participation in a BioBlitz.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Assist in the delivery of stewardship, outreach and education based programming
• Assist in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the program
• Represent the project, the proponent and partners at local fairs, AGMs and other environmental events
• Assist in the distribution information packages and surveys to residents of our target lakes
• Solicit information from residents, attendees of local events, etc. that may contribute to data collection activities (surveys and evaluations)
• Attend a BioBlitz and collect and create a species list from data obtained
• Assist in the organization of “Shoreline workshops” to be held on each lake
• Writing of individual property reports for each property surveyed (approx. 400) using a template

Additional Responsibilities:
• Support other project components and staff as assigned by the management
• Act as a spokesperson for the organization
• Some local travel, evening and weekend work is required

Qualification Requirements:

Education
• Some College or University, with preference given to those with a specialization in Natural Resources Management, Communications, Environmental Studies/Science or Biology

Experience
• None required, however preference will be given to those with some experience in the conservation and/or non-profit sector(s)

Skills
• Excellent judgment and decision making skills
• Comfortable with public speaking and engagement of the public
• Excellent written and oral communication, in English.
• Proven multi-tasking skills in a fast-paced environment, completing projects within time constraints
• Computer skills with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Publisher, Access, and Outlook
• Proven teamwork and skills
• Proven high level of motivation and initiative

Other
• Valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle
• Possess (or ability to obtain) a Pleasure Craft Operator Card
• Able to work outside in all weather conditions
• First-aid/CPR is an asset
• Boat operation experience is an asset
