Partners In Health (“PIH”), co-founded by Paul Farmer and Ophelia Dahl and headquartered in Boston, MA, is an internationally recognized non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through its service delivery, training, advocacy and research, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH has major programs in Haiti, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Burundi, Kazakhstan, the Dominican Republic, and Boston, working tirelessly to lessen the joint burden of disease and poverty.
This is an exciting time for PIH as the organization is going through a period of significant growth. PIH has played a vital role in the response and reconstruction of Haiti following the 2010 earthquake, and these efforts are resulting in both a broadened scope of work and heightened visibility for the organization. IMB, PIH’s sister organization in Rwanda, has the goal of supporting the Rwandan Ministry of Health at the district and national levels, to improve the health and promote the rights of the people of Rwanda by ensuring universal access to high quality, comprehensive care.
Overall Responsibilities
The External Relations Coordinator is an important member of the Rwanda team, providing organization and logistics coordination for all visitors to IMB, and serving as a representative of IMB for donors and other visitors. This individual’s primary responsibilities include logistics coordination; accompaniment of donors and visitors; liaison with the Boston-based Rwanda, Communications and Development teams; write stories and communications pieces; and coordinate with local media.
Specific Responsibilities
I. Visitor Management
-Screen requests to ensure appropriate and manageable flow of all visitors including donors and local and international media.
-Track all visitors to IMB sites: maintain regularly updated visitor calendar, send biweekly comings/goings report
-Manage all visitor logistics: coordinate with IMB staff, health center and hospital management, arrange airport pick up, lodging and transport. Serve as a point of contact in the field for visitors.
-Develop itineraries tailored to visitor interest, give tours of IMB/MOH sites and schedule necessary meetings with IMB staff.
-Communicate with Boston-based Rwanda and Development teams to report on visits including needed follow-up.
II. Development
-Communicate regularly with Boston-based PIH development team.
-Work with Boston team to gather content for proposals and donor reports.
-Assist with grant-writing and concept note preparation.
III. Communications
-Communicate regularly with Boston-based PIH communications team, and work with team to gather content for communications materials.
-Research and write one story per month on exciting IMB initiatives for the website.
-Work with Country Director office to PR/communications strategy.
-Build relationships with local media; ensure 1 story per month on IMB-work is featured in local media.
-Other activities as assigned by local management.
Qualifications
-Bachelor’s Degree required; background/interest in social science, area studies or public health preferred.
-Demonstrated experience (2 years minimum) providing administrative or coordinative and logistics support in an office setting.
-Excellent interpersonal skills required.
-Ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse staff.
-Enthusiasm for global health.
-Demonstrated maturity and good judgment.
-Language skills in French preferred.
-Interest in social justice and health care issues.
