On Tuesday 30 June 18 prisoners from the Kirikiri Medium Security Custodial Center were released by Lagos Chief Judge Kazeem Alogba.
Pursuant to orders from President Muhammadu Buhari and Chief of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, the prisoners who have been in custody of the prison since 2016 for crimes such as theft, robbery and illegal conversion were transferred to the heads of courts.
Heads of court were ordered to decongest the prisons to curb coronavirus (COVID-19) spread among prisoners.
Pursuant to Section 1(1) Criminal Justice Release from Custody (Special Provisions) Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2007, the prisoners were released under the jurisdiction of the chief judge. It was achieved at a “Correctional Centers Decongestion Exercise” case held in Igbosere’s J.I.C. Taylor Court House.
