Anxiety as 67 years old women was raped and killed by herdsmen

The government of Enugu State condemned the alleged murder of a woman in a farmland in the community of Nchatancha in Emene, Enugu East Local Government Area.

In a statement by the State Government Secretary, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, the government condoled with the deceased’s family and charged the security agencies to launch a full-scale investigation into the unfortunate incident in order to apprehend and prosecute the culprits.

In a similar development, Ugwuanyi directed the chairmen of the 17 councils, who are still to mount security checkpoints in their respective areas in order to do so within two weeks, to ensure adequate security operations in their localities.

Prof. Ortuanya’s declaration said the government of the state “deeply appreciates the good people of the state for their cooperation and support and reassured them that “we are winning the war against criminality.”

Yesterday, after the alleged rape and murder of a 67-year-old woman, Mrs. Regina Mba, by persons suspected of being Fulani herdsmen, there was confusion in the Emene part of Enugu.

Also, Kaosisochukwu Anioma, daughter of Frank Anioma, a former vice-president of the Senate, was abducted in Enugu metropolis at about 7:00 a.m. yesterday.

The event at Enugu East Local Government Area’s Nchatacha-Nike suburb created complete gridlock as youth from the area protesting the gruesome killing blocked traffic on the ever busy Enugu-Abakaliki highway.

Enugu State Police Command’s spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident, said police commissioner Suleiman Balarabe had also been undertaking a full-scale investigation into the incident.

Nchatancha-Nike Community President General Kingsley Anike said: “She (the deceased) went to farm yesterday (Wednesday) within the hours of 2pm and six in the evening, she was attacked.

“Later in the evening when we expected her home, she didn’t come back. We started searching for her throughout the night and this morning (yesterday), there was an expanded search team.

“It wasn’t really a distant farm, it is a nearby farm because people are not leaving far from the location, so we saw her corpse and on getting there, we saw her undies were torn apart, lying by the side, she sustained stabbing on her hands and at the back of her neck and she was dead already.

“We called the police who have visited the scene and took photo shots of the whole situation. The body has been deposited in the mortuary,” she said.

The corpse was verified to have been deposited for autopsy at the Annunciation Hospital mortuary.

Anioma, former Nkanu East Local Government Area Chairman, had taken his Facebook page to raise the alarm about his daughter’s alleged kidnapping.

He said she was kidnapped on her way to New Haven Market at around 7 am yesterday morning. He added that there was no response to her phone ringing ; but “now it’s ringing line busy.”

Sympathizers trooped off to their Abakaliki Road, GRA, residence in Enugu once the news became viral.

There was no contact with the abductors at the time of filing this report.
