Burundi qualified for the second round of the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier where they will face Uganda Cranes.
In a second leg match played here on Sunday, the Burundi squad defeated South Sudan 2-1 advancing on a 4-1 goal aggregate to set up a clash against Uganda next month.
South Sudan, who performed here because the national stadium is under refurbishment, took an early lead through Jose Kutch Nyuar.
Iddy Muselemu and Olivier Dusabe’s two second half objectives were enough to send Burundi to the next round.
“I am happy to score one of the goals that has helped the team qualify for the next stage. But we must prepare well because Uganda is a strong team,” said Burundi’s Dusabe after the game.
Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia and Tanzania are now joining Rwanda and Sudan in the qualifiers ‘ final round.
Rwanda and Sudan are the two teams that will begin from round 2 as they have accumulated more points in CHAN competitions than any other team in the east and central African region.
The CHAN tournament is performed by locally based teams playing in the respective nations and regions ‘ national leagues. Morocco is the defending champions.
