The City of Kigali council has appointed Parfait Busabizwa as the acting Mayor of the City, pending the by-election by which a substantive mayor is elected.
Busabizwa, who serves as Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, temporarily succeeds outgoing Mayor Marie-Chantal Rwakazina, who was newly appointed as Rwanda’s ambassador to Switzerland.
Rwakazina, who was recently cleared to assume her diplomatic responsibilities by the senator, will replace François-Xavier Ngarambe, who has been redeployed to France.
Busabizwa had already handed over to Rwakazina, as he bade goodbye to peers at City Hall on Monday.
Since May 2018, she has been in the office for more than a year, replacing Pascal Nyamurinda, who resigned a month earlier.
Athanase Rutabingwa, the Chairperson of the City Council told journalists that, “he [Busabizwa] will be acting as the City Mayor until the new City Mayor is elected as we are in the process of organizing elections.
“We cannot specify the date at the moment I am sure it will be communicated soon,” he added.
The National Electoral Commission (NEC) organized the by-election.
