Rwf 12 billion to be spent in building over 3000 new classrooms

Among other school equipment, the country is planning to spend Rwf12 billion on building new main and secondary  school classrooms, latrines and washrooms.

The Director General of Education and Planning at the Ministry of Education, Rose Baguma, told reporters that the move comes after the Ministry of Finance expanded the budget for the education industry.

It is anticipated that financing will decongest schools and considerably decrease the distance learners travel to  school, particularly in rural Rwanda.

Under the scheme, the government will build 1,100 classrooms and over 1,000 toilets, enhancing learners and teachers ‘ capacity to access college equipment.

“This is part of the Government’s campaign to uplift academic standards all over the country. This will ensure that  no student travels more than 2km looking for a school,” she said.

The government has also been able to construct new school equipment as the education budget continues to rise.

Some 416 classrooms and 470 latrines were built in the fiscal year 2016/2017. The number in 2018/2019 grew to  1,043 schools and 1,344 latrines before continuing to rise to 1776 schools and 1452 latrines.

Baguma also revealed that this year the World Bank committed $200 million to the education industry.

Some 27,000 additional new classrooms and 3,600 bathrooms are planned to be added to World Bank financing,  bringing the complete amount of new schools to 38,000.

Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Uzziel Ndagijimana said previously to reporters that financing will help improve the quality of education

“About 70 per cent of the project will go towards school infrastructure such as increasing the number of classrooms, equipping them and reducing the number of students so as to decongest classrooms,” he said.

Ndagijimana claims this has a far- reaching effect on the quality of education as educators can readily monitor learners on a regular basis.
